A thought for an upcoming clay match

A thought for an upcoming clay match - 03/05/17 04:25 AM

Okay, my buddy is going to have a benchrest clay match April 30th at a private club in Cumby. Normally he only has an open class but thought if there was enough interest about having a hunting/tactical class. So I thought some of y'all might want to give this a try. All shooting will be at 300y.

Open class is benchrest rifles with bench rests and rear bags or rear rests...but no one piece rests. Mini clays (2.25") are shot.

Hunting/tactical must shoot off bench but front support must either be bipod or bag....a rear bag will be allowed. Regular (4") clay are shot.

The way these matches work is you get there and pay your entry and get your bench/relay assignment. Get your stuff unloaded on/around your bench and put out whatever wind flags you want. Then a shooters meeting occurs and then relay A has a sight in period to shoot at paper or steel, shoot as many rounds as you want within the time period allotted (normally 7-8 minutes). A clay check is performed them you shot for score, only 10 rounds on the bench for the 10 clays for score same amount of time is allotted.

Then relay B, C, D, etc shoot their sight in and score. Once everyone has shot their first round it starts over but the only sight in period is before the first score clays are shot. So round 2, 3 and 4 you shoot your ten clays and then the next relay shoots their ten until everyone has shot at their 40 clays.

As I typed this up I realized the most important question I forgot to ask...the entry fee. I don't know but normally they range between $30 & 40 for the local matches. I'll update that info later.

Anyone interested?

I would be very interested as long as the clays are not in the shape of a friggin' prairie dog.

Re: A thought for an upcoming clay match - 03/05/17 06:09 PM

I would love to shoot something like this but am taking the wife on a short vacation that weekend.
Posted By: Judd

Re: A thought for an upcoming clay match - 03/06/17 03:21 AM

I actually prefer Sunday matches, it gives me Saturday to prep/load...to each their own.

Anyway, to answer assume questions... if he decides to add this class the entry well be the same as open and paid out separately, meaning you aren't shooting against open shooters. $35

Cumby is just east of Commerce.

If he does something like that again let me know Judd. Sucks I cannot make this one but I would really enjoy shooting something like this.

Details and location:

I recently discovered an old but very good Bench Rest Shooting Range called Small Groups Rifle Range. It was formerly named Outback Sportsman's Club, located just out of Commerce, TX. Bring your own shooting stool.

Directions to the range and other information is available at the website which is www.smallgroupsriflerange.com.

The range is about 7 miles east of Commerce on Hwy 11. The address is: CR4737, Cumby, TX 75433

Re: A thought for an upcoming clay match - 04/12/17 02:23 PM

What's a rail gun Judd?
Posted By: Judd

Re: A thought for an upcoming clay match - 04/12/17 02:27 PM

It's basically a gun that rides on rails...no stock and is like a taking an action and attaching it to a machine that manages recoil. It's a benchrest class, they are interesting...for pictures google benchrest rail guns.

FYI - I do not own one smile

Re: A thought for an upcoming clay match - 04/18/17 02:44 AM

Whatever the 120mm are, I think that's the large full size clay but don't have one too measure.

You'll have plenty of time to zero as long as you can hit the paper.

There is one end of the range where there will be plenty of places to stand around and not get wet. There will be some guys I suspect that will even bring ez-ups to have and everyone is super cool and will let you stand wherever.

Bring a stool and chair and you'll be in good shape.

Re: A thought for an upcoming clay match - 04/30/17 06:38 PM

Was a good match for sure had a great time and met some good guys. These guys are precise in every movement it seems like. They have a lot of very expensive guns and equipment. Thanks for the heads up Judd good seeing you again.

Only 3 THF guys showed up 2beez, P_102, and myself always help to already be in the money before you start rofl we need more guys for the next one. We shot the tactical match everyone else shot the open match. They were both one in the same just we got bigger clays. Wind was insane today, but we all seemed to manage and the open guys really got it done. Think first place hit 37/40 2 5/16" targets. We got to shoot at the bigger 3 1/2" targets. The range officer said he'd look for us some bigger ones next time, I told him to look for 10" clays.

Ended up getting 2nd out of three which is normal I'm always in the middle. Kind of weird was sighted in at 100 and my 300 yard dope should have been 1.3 Mils and Josh was using 1Mil. Went out to 300 yards and couldn't figure out why I couldn't hit anything so I shot at a large white paper with targets and was 1Mil low when measured with my reticle. So dialed 2.3Mils at 300 and first round hit 6/10 targets. Second round I missed my first two shots and like an idiot thought I should turn it back down to 1.3Mils and spent the rest of my shots on paper instead of clays for second relay. After getting it dialed back in was sitting back at 2.3Mils again makes no sense. For 3rd and 4th relay I left it alone and just shot. Wind was insane like I said and was whipping me pretty good. Tried to catch P_102 but after the goose egg on 2nd relay just couldn't pull it out.

Had a great time though and will attend another.

Re: A thought for an upcoming clay match - 04/30/17 07:47 PM

Dang, Kyle, did ya have to post the numbers?! The wind really was brutal and besides the 3.5" targets they also threw in a handful of the 2 5/16" targets for us...personally I'm damned proud to have hit a couple of them at 300 in that kind of wind!
It really is a nice place to shoot with a lot of good people, we need to get a better showing next time!

P_102

Oh yeah....in all fairness to 2Beez, we think his rifle hit the "I need to be cleaned" barrier about the time we were sighting in.

Re: A thought for an upcoming clay match - 04/30/17 09:18 PM

Buzz, for "tactical" we had a total of 32 3.5" targets and 8 2 5/16" targets. The "bench" shooters had 40 2 5/16" targets.
If you'd have come, you would have won!

Thanks for coming out guys. It was good to see y'all again too. I can't help but feel I let this one slip from my fingers, aggravating. It'll sting for a bit but what keeps making me come back for more, 2 weeks I'll get to go back down to Huntsville for a 600y match.
