Threading a typical sporter-weight barrel?

I have a compact little .243 and was thinking that would be a great gun to put a suppressor on (for kids and such).

But, the barrel is a standard 22" "sporter weight" and I'm not sure if there is enough meat to thread for a 5/8-24 can. What do you guys think? Doable to a have a smith thread it? Or am I better off getting a totally different rifle that comes with a threaded barrel already?

For what it's worth, I'd get a .30 cal suppressor so I could run it on my 7.62x39 AR as well.

Without knowing what the diameter was at the end of the barrel, I couldn't say for sure. But, most sporter weight barrels dont have enough meat there to do 5/8-24

Get the QD mount instead of threaded.

I can measure OD of the barrel. But what I don't know is what min thickness you need between the threads and the ID.

Been thinking about getting a 6.5 Creedmoor anyway. This may just be the excuse I need Hear good things about that Ruger American, and the Predator version comes with a threaded barrel.

The barrel diameter of my son's Tikka compact 308 is .650" at the muzzle. It's much too small for 5/8x24". That leaves a threading of 9/16" or 1/2". Most choose a 9/16" threading for a muzzle brake. If you threaded it 9/16", then that leaves about a .0875" shoulder (.650" minus 9/16"), which is a little thin for a suppressor, IMO. If you went 1/2"x28 (typical AR-15 threading), it would have enough meat for the shoulder and under the threading for the bore. I'm not a fan of most of the cheap QD mounts that grip with only 2 teeth (one on each side), as they come loose easily, wear quickly, and cause problems.

Thank you Chad, that's the info I was after. Sounds like I'm better off building a suppressor-dedicated gun and leaving this one alone.

you could always try cutting the barrel down, would give you a little more substance to thread...just a thought

A safe minimum barrel diameter for 5/8x24 threading is typically around .750". This measurement can be taken .600" back from the muzzle, as that's where your shoulder will sit after threading. That will give you plenty of shoulder for your suppressor to seat on. I recently had a 6.5x284 threaded for my Omega, and assumed the barrel had plenty of meat. After receiving it back I noticed it didn't have a lot of shoulder. I measured it at .710". Silencerco's minimum recommended is .720". It works fine, but I really should have taken the time to measure diameter and look at specs prior to shipping it off. I could have cut it back an inch or so, and been within spec. I'm new to the suppressor world, so I'm learning as I go and realizing there's a lot to look at when considering host weapons.

What about 9/16 to 5/8 adapter?

Same question as Redsnake. Lots of adapters sold out there. If a barrel is ok for a 1/2 threading, can you then buy an adapter?

On my rem 700 .308 with spotter barrel, even at 16.5" there wasn't enough meat to thread

My Tikka T3 7/08 was threaded by Morgan @ DSS and without chopping the barrel any he threaded it to 9/16" and it's been solid..

Possibly, with the right planning and set up, you could do that. How that would work and fit exactly, would be the next question, which depends on how the can screws on and mounts to the barrel. That's a phone call to the suppressor mfg or your gun smith.

I have a ruger m77 270 with sporter barrel that has the adapter -- running a surefire socom rc 30 cal can over their 5/8 QD brake. It's ugly looking with that adapter!

Morgan at DSS (Now Class 3 Machining I believe) cut and threaded my factory Tikka 7mm-08. He threaded it 1/2x28 and I bought a 1/2x28 to 5/8x24 adapter online for about 15 bucks.

I direct thread my Omega suppressor on and it shoots great. Morgan is a good guy, if you want to thread the rifle give him a shout.

I have a griffin Reece 7 that uses a taper mount. The good thing is I can buy mounts for either 1/2x28 or 5/8x24 and both can shoot 30 cal. I have a Tikka T3 308 compact that was cut down to 17" and has a 1/2x28 threads. Works great.

Remington is offering a 20" Sporter barrel 700 in 243 with factory 5/8x24 threads, might be the ticket for you.

We turn the barrel to no taper and concentric with the bore then silver solder a sleeve with enough diameter to make a good shoulder. Thread, taper to make look pretty.

I'd be very careful about who you would get to make a threaded adapter if you go down that route.

My Kimber has a 0.59" muzzle diameter. Factory thread on it is 7/16" I believe. I called up SAS as I had a small 6.5 caliber suppressor from them. They made me a custom 7/16" thread muzzle brake.

My factory Tikka barrels are threaded 1/2×28 then I use a 5/8×24 adapter without issues.
