28 Nosler 1 Mile

28 Nosler 1 Mile - 09/23/16 11:20 PM

Since I got my HF 28 Nosler I have wanted to give it a go at hitting a steel target at one Mile.
Really is kinda hard to find a safe place to easily shoot that far and also see bullet impact when you miss.
I am down in S Tx and after some scouting I found a road to shoot one mile away on.
Set up a 24 inch sq plate at what the Sig Kilo said was 1760.3 and then used a app on my phone to verify and it said exactly 1 mile.
I am shooting the 195gr Bergers from a 28 inch 1-8 twist barrel that Derrick at Horizon throated for that bullet so take note it's not a standard factory chamber.
Anyway I used my IPhone attached to a Vortex Razor to video each shot so I could replay if my impact could not be seen thru my scope or the other spotter.
I had 3 guys observing as well. Wind was right to left varying from 3.5-6.5 MPH and I dialed a little too much wind missing slightly to the right on the first two shots.
3rd Round was just right of center and slightly high but I was just happy to be on steel.

Not many people can claim a one-mile hit. That's a pretty small target for that kind of range, too. Nice shooting!

Lots of variables have to line up for that to happen. Great shooting!

How much drop did you have with that?

It took 13.4 mil elevation. At its highest point the bullet would have cleared a 7 story building.

That's a good guess as I had to get some on the way down there but no.

It's actually made in Sweden and is sold by an American company or so it says on the container.
Also found it while headed down and had been looking for some more after buying a few 1 lb bottles.

You lucky dog! That's the first real evidence I've seen that the stuff actually exists, and it's been talked about for a long time.

That's NOT what you're using in the .28, though, is it?

If I were a betting man, I would bet the 28 Nosler is getting a diet of the same brand of powder but add 10 to the number on those bottles.

No , you are correct not using it in the 28 Nosler. It's getting a healthy dose of Reloder 33.

The Reloder 16 I have so far used in the 6.5 Creedmoor,30-06 and the 7.5 Swiss. All results were positive.
I was lucky about three weeks ago to find several one pound bottles in Misississipi and then stopped by another place and they told me they a big order coming in mid September so I checked back since I was down south and sure enough they had it.

Re: 28 Nosler 1 Mile - 09/27/16 01:06 PM

By the way I learned a new trick on the little adventure. We were having trouble getting the Sig Kilo 2000 to give readings at 1 Mile. It was pretty bright sun and it would do fine to about 1200 yards on bushes and trees but at 1 Mile nada.
We had two vehicles there and I noticed the ranch truck had two large strips if reflective tape along the back near the license plate. I had my partners drive down to the target while I sat at the bench and as they drove slow I got readings with no problem at 1 mile off the rear of the truck.
We reversed it later and shot just the plates on my vehicle and it worked perfectly.
This maybe old hat to some but I remembered it from the talk Nick gave at the Litz's class about using certain type paints for reflective levels while they researched RF comparison's.
