Where to find a unicorn

Where to find a unicorn - 09/18/16 02:24 PM

Got a buddy that likes odd stuff and often ask me to help look as apparently I'm pretty good at finding them. This one has me stumped as I haven't found s single hit.

357 automag

No clue why he wants one but since there's usually some sort of perk for me where in the world could I find one?

I'd say that if it can't be found on Gunbroker, it IS a unicorn and you'd just have to be in the right place at the right time. And very lucky.

The company is still in business, and you can order one through their dealers.

Sounds like he wants an AMT Automag not a Coonan.

Yes AMT automag. No clue why since ammo is almost not available either but his money not mine.

And of course he is gonna be picky and want the 6" barrel.

Coonan and Desert Eagle both make 357 Mag pistols but they are not the AMT Automag. There were not many of the Automag pistols made in 357, don't know the number but it was lower than many of their other offerings. If you find one it ain't going to be cheap.

Of the Automag pistols I have shot my favorite is the Automag III in 30 Carbine which is a true fire breather at night,

From what I've found in 357 there were only 4000 made so with that being said I doubt I am going to find one under $2500

Sounds about right, the 30 Carbine ones I see are now 1200 to 1600 and they made more of them than the 357.

Good luck on the search, if I see one will let you know

He says he's ready when I find one and would prefer face to face so he can check it out but I've yet to find one in Texas or within a day's drive yet.

Re: Where to find a unicorn - 09/18/16 04:12 PM

I had an Automag III in .30 Carbine; it was a great gun to shoot, very loud and massive muzzle blast, but very little recoil; the grip was fairly long to accommodate the cartridge length. Unfortunately, it was stolen years ago.

Get ready to write a check for a .357 Automag in decent condition. It's also a bottlenecked pistol cartridge, which are harder to reload.

He's done his research already. My first question was why and then how the heck are you gonna find ammo.

Re: Where to find a unicorn - 09/18/16 04:30 PM

But he'd probably be ok with a 44 too

You pretty well have to roll your own ammo.

He loads but I don't think he knows what he's getting into on this one.

Are the automags what clint eastwood used in that one dirty harry movie? I didn't know about automags, i just thought you were talking about those coonans.

You can make brass from any of the .30-06 family of cartridges, but you need the appropriate forming dies, etc. It's non-trivial.

I'll pay a finders fee to anyone who can find a Sphinx 2000 in duo-tone like this;

Or, even this; http://www.genitron.com/HandgunDB/DBImages/sphinx-2000p.gif

Not unicorn status by any means, but still not something to be found easily.
