Does a wheat field count? 1 mile by 1 mile.
Accuracy International 308 Win.
Longest shot was 470, dropped where it stood with a 175 SMK.

Or it could be a
30-378 wby.

Re: Best bean field rifle - 09/10/16 12:30 AM
6.5 Creedmoor
260 Rem
6.5-06
6.5-284
26 Nosler
264 Win Mag
7mm-08
7mm-08 A.I.
284 Win
280 Rem
280 Rem A.I.
7 Rem Mag
28 Nosler
7-300
7 WSM
7 SAUM
.308 Win
300 Win Mag
300 Jarrett

Pick one, it doesn't matter. Cook a barrel on one of them practicing, and hunting, put a new barrel on it, then take any one of them to the "beanfield".

Re: Best bean field rifle - 09/10/16 01:06 AM
I hunted bean fields for 50 years and used a 270 for the last 40 years of that. If I was going back to that part of the country, I'd park my beloved 260 and dust off my trusty old Sako 270. It's just a bigger hammer.
If I had to add a rifle, I think I'd lean toward the 6.5-284 or the 6.5 Rem Mag. Both of them are equal to the 270, and you could give them extra points for a better BC, but inside 400 yards BC difference between .277 and .264 doesn't mean much.
Hard to beat the 270 for the bean field, though my hard headed cousin thinks his 6.5-280 (yes, you read that right) is better. I tell him it's a 6.5-06 but he says he necked down his 280 brass, so by God it's a 6.5-280.

My apologies, sir. It was not intentional.
Growing up in Kentucky "bean field" meant we were crossing the river to hunt Ohio. And "rifle" meant 12 gauge slugs.
Two years ago the Ohio DNR got all generous and started allowing limited straight-walled rifle & pistol calibers...better know your range estimations & dope charts well when a 45-90 is considered the "hot" rifle in camp.

6mm, 6.5mm or 7mm. Various flavors of each and they all work well.

"Best bean field rifle" says title...didn't ask for caliber...
Setup with a Sako TRG42 and go from there...

Just like the car or truck you drive, use what you like. Rifle needs to put the bullet where it goes every time it makes a cold bore shot.

Re: Best bean field rifle - 09/10/16 01:45 PM
Easy....Take a Sako action, screw a Bartlein 2B on it, chamber it in 7STW, put a Nightforce F1 on top, load up some 160 AB's, and rock on. Over and done

Thank god someone knows how to read
My personal favorite was always the sendero in .25-06 but I think the accumark in .257 wby trumps it
Winchester also made a bean field gun but I can't remember what it was called

Is there an official list of features a designated "bean field" rifle must have?

Typically they are heavy barreled, heavier than a sporter weight gun, most wear synthetic stocks and chambered for flat shooting calibers.

Add to that 1200 ft/lbs out to 600 yards
I'm not sure it would qualify but I really liked the Tikka CTR in 308 I fondled today. I even liked the stock. Bolt was super slick.

That's not even close to being a bean field rifle

I think .308 falls under 1200 ft/lbs at 600 as well, though maybe not by much.

We were always told the rule of thumb was 900 ft.lbs on impact for southern whitetails.
However a .308 was never really a beanfield caliber due to its velocity.

Re: Best bean field rifle - 09/12/16 03:23 PM
Guess I'd have to use my trusty old 270 win Rem 700 Sendero, gun just shoots for me, I would probably want a scope with some turrets though, not sure me and the old Leupold could guess at trajectory good enough.
My furthest kills have been logged with a borrowed CZ chambered in 222 rem and a Rem 700 adl chambered in 223.
