Most handgun bullets leave the muzzle somewhere between 800 and 1500 feet per second, but decelerate exceedingly rapidly.

100 feet per second is approx 70 miles per hour. Easy to ratio that upwards.

Divide your velocity by 1.466 to get MPH

...or go to Google and enter whatever fps you want to convert in the search bar like this:

1500 fps = mph

It will miraculously give you the answer.

Don't think your sunglasses will help all that much in stopping a bullet.

(fps times 3600) divided by 5280= mph

Re: What is the speed of a handgun bullet in mph? - 09/09/16 04:53 PM

When you crunch all the conversions from feet per second to mph, you get a conversion factor of approximately .6818. So any time you have a number that is in feet per second, you just multiply it by .6818 and that converts it to miles per hour. That's the same as the dividing by 1.466 like GLB suggested. And the .6818 comes from 3600 divided by 5280 like rarjar said.

Rebeca you said " i know its 3000 feet per second. "

what handgun do you know of that has a muzzle velocity of 3000 FPS ?

Where do you "know" this from?

x2

You might need to check your data.
here are some generic muzzle velocities

5.7x28mm - 2,550 fps
.17hmr - 1,830 fps
.22 short - 1,010 fps
.22LR - 950 fps
.22WMR - 1,460 fps
.25 auto - 760 fps
.357 Magnum - 1,235 fps
.357 SIG - 1,350 fps
.380ACP - 955 fps
.38 SPC +P - 890 fps
.40S&W - 1,020 fps
10 Auto - 1,290 fps
.44 SPC - 750 fps
.45 ACP - 835 fps
9mm +P - 1,200 fps
9mm - 1,140 fps

The slowest is .44 special at 750 fps which is 511 mph

The fastest is 5.7x28mm at 2,550 fps which is 1738 mph.

Figure the most common are 9mm at 1,140 fps - 777 mph
or .40 S&W at 1,020 fps - 695 mph
or .45ACP at 835 fps - 569 mph

3,000 fps or 2045 mph is more of a rifle speed. (not saying that there is not a pistol that will do it, but it is not one that you would commonly buy stock) It would have to have an extended barrel and a small, hot loaded bullet.

Kinda weird to think in miles per hour considering a bullet will loose most of its velocity before it ever gets close to a mile

You'll never know how true that is. I shot my eye out with a BB gun when I was 12. I'm that kid your mom warned you about

Didn't shoot my eye out but my cousin shot me with a bob gun. Hurt like hell.

I still have a BB in my foot from when a friend shot me when we were young. Too close to a nerve to remove it. I still owe him for that.
