Ruger Blackhawk 4-5/8" in .45 Colt. - 09/08/16 03:46 AM

My 'ol buddy Geezer Ranger found me one of these this past week (thank you SO much brother, you are the BEST!) and it's quickly becoming one of my favorites. I can dance soda cans around at 30 yards with factory 250 grain lead RNFP Winchester factory loads (which for me is freaking stellar performance as I'm not a very good pistol shot eek ).

Anyway, I think I'd like to try taking a hog or three with it (after a bit more practice). Looking for advice on .45 Colt loads as I have dies and components on hand already, except for bullets.

Suggestions?

congrats on your new 45 Colt! is it a regular large frame Blackhawk? or one of the Medium frame Flat tops from Lipsey's?

if it were me i'd go with a good hard cast bullet. the Elmer Keith 454424 or the RCBS 270SAA are both great bullets. you can find them here, http://www.mattsbullets.com/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=71

Brian Pearce did an excellent write up on the 270SAA and gave many loads to choose from.

and John Linebaugh gives some Excellent hunting loads here.

Thanks! It's a regular large frame. Still getting used to it. Liking it almost as much as my 1911's, if I can find a good accurate hunting load I'll start using it.

I've had one of those for almost two years, and though it's a great pistol I like the feel and balance of the shorter Blackhawk better. The new (to me) one has rekindled my interest in the round. No worries, I'll probably make a present out of the Bisley to my brother. He's wanted one for a while.

My deer and hog load is a 255 SWC cast bullet over 10 grains of Unique for a Blackhawk frame revolver as well as leverguns.

Big Melplate Hard Cast Bullet for hunting. Great round and great gun, enjoy it.
