Gun value?

Gun value? - 07/07/16 02:25 PM

My FIL bought a Stevens 12 gauge Model 225 side by side at an auction. Gun has exposed hammers and appears to be in good condition. According to the serial number it was built in 1967 or 68. No rust, bluing is mostly in decent shape, lock is pretty tight and hammers are tight. Has dual triggers and wood is in good shape no cracks.

Anyone have an idea of what its worth? He gave 100 bucks for it. He doesn't know a lot about guns so asked me what I thought it was worth, but I'm not very familiar with older shotguns and stuff. I told him it probably wasn't a very valuable gun even in good condition, but was likely worth the 100 he gave for it or more as I believe it is in shootable shape.

Thanks for any info.

I wouldn't say it's collector grade but it's def. worth $100

Off hand guess maybe worth $350-$500

I just googled around a little and they were saying anywhere from 100-400.

Not sure if it makes a difference, the gun Says Stevens A&T Co. on it, seems to be some debate weather that means it was built in the 60's or the early 1900's, I think 1905-1910.

If it says A&T, should be between 1906-1910. Stevens lost all their records in a fire, so getting an actual date on firearms prior to the 49 isn't feasible.

If it were made '49 or after, there would be a date stamp letter on bottom or frame or hinge pin. It may be in a circle, and may have a letter with it.

Ok, it definitely says Stevens A&T Co. on the bottom of the gun. If you break open the action on the bottom of the lock it has a cerial number and there is a mark that looks like a letter, but not positive. Are the Stevens A&T guns supposed to also have a letter in the serial number?

Stevens went by

J. Stevens $ Co. 1864-1886
J. Stevens Arms & Tool Co. 1886-1916
J. Stevens Arms Co. 1915-1945
Stevens Arms 1945-1991 and 1999+

Letter dating codes were only on the guns from 1949 through around 1968/1970 -
