Savage 24V Over/Under

Savage 24V Over/Under - 05/23/16 01:13 PM

My wife was given an old rifle/shotgun by her Dad. It's a Savage 24V series D over/under. .357 magnum over a 20 gauge shotgun. It has a selector on the hammer for which barrel you want to fire. Really cool looking shooter. It's not in perfect condition. Has been just a little neglected. Gave it a good cleaning and it's ready to try out. Everything functions well.

I'm hoping it's a fairly good squirrel / coyote gun combo. I'll find out this next weekend how she shoots.

Me neither. Still want one in .22 Mag over 20 ga. Be a terrific squirrel and rabbit gun.

That's an interesting combo of calibers. It'd probably make a great brush gun!

I collect Savage 24's. The only ones more scarce are the 22 Hornet/20 and the 357Max/20. They are cool guns guns. Hope you enjoy it.

Really neat combo. I've got one in 22/410 with a Tenite stock, I'm almost afraid to shoot it. That plastic is getting OLD!

IT's my favorite gun these days. It now has a rack in the golf cart, and on the Kubota tractor. Perfect for general varmints and pests. I think it would be a great turkey gun. And in 22LR/20 gauge, probably the cheapest to shoot.

Lots of kids around here have shot their "first" with this one.

I'm guessing the .357 mag round would be good out to about 75 yards or so.

I was thinking that the 357Max would have been a better choice than 357mag.

Very useful and cool gun. Inside 125 yards I feel as confident shooting deer and hogs with a 357 carbine as any caliber I have used. Most of the time at the lease the Marlin 1894 357 trapper is in it for occasions it might ne needed.

have never seen the 357 or 357max versions of the 24 for sale or there would most likely be one in the safe. One of my uncles had a 22 Hornet/20ga for a while but sold it.

You shouldn't talk like that... I'm fighting the urge to buy a 357 trapper!!

A 1894 in 44 mag will drop a white tail buck at about 100 yards.

That's a cool gun, my grandfather had one in 222 over ???? Seems like it was a 12 gauge because I remember the shells as red not yellow......

As much as I like mine, not going to try to talk anyone out of one.

Years ago, I had a 357 lever gun, it was a deer killing dude out to 125, especially with the 180 gr hollow points from Federal

That is what I have found with mine. The 180s leave the barrel of a carbine about the same speed as they do from a 357Max. Plenty for deer and hogs at 125 yards. Light recoil and handy as well

Wonder if a guy is salty enough, could he make what he wanted? .223 over 12 ga would be cool, donor barrels of course. I've probably got all the equipment, just don't have all the skills, or the time.

FWIW - I put a 1.5 X 4 scope on my 24 and sighted it in at 100 with the .223. Nice MOA group. For grins I put a large piece of white paper 2' X 2' with horizontal & vertical lines up up at 40 yds. I lined up the cross hairs with the lines on the paper and dumped a load of #6 12ga. Pattern was large spread but even. A turkey wouldn't have had a chance. up

Re: Savage 24V Over/Under - 05/31/16 07:57 PM

I bought a Savage 24 when I was in my teens. My brother still has it. It is a .22 mag. Over a 20 gauge 3". I had it scoped and almost used the .22 mag.exclusively. The .22 rifle barrel appears to be welded to the shotgun barrel for the whole length and not elevated up from the lower barrel on pillars like many I have seen. This made for a very accurate .22 mag. It was as stiff as a bull barrel. Only bad thing was the tip off mounts. They aren't very good.
As far as the .357 rifle for deer, I really like mine. I have a Winchester Trapper, a Marlin Cowboy, and a Ruger bolt gun. I especially like the Ruger's accuracy. They hammer deer and you can eat right up to the hole. No blood shot meat. Coupled with low recoil and low muzzle blast the .357 rifle is a winner. I keep my shots to under about 125 yards. Lots of drop after that. I like a heavy bullet with lots of meplate.
