AR billet and forged mix - 04/02/16 02:29 AM

For cosmetic reason only, I am one of those that like upper and lower brands to match.. Would forged upper blend with a billet lower? Brand in question is a Seekins

Dang! I sure hope so!

I was gonna go as cheap as I could find but ended up finding a good deal on a Midwest billet upper for my plane, Jane yhm forged lower. I assumed it would mate up.

The finish will proabably be a little off. Can always get it painted.

It will look mismatched.

Even if it's forged upper and lower from different brands it will be slightly mismatched, same goes for milled. Colors won't be perfect either

If you're gonna build, at least build a matched set. Billet sets match up perfectly.

Well some of us like our weapons like we like our women and chicken, with just a little bit of fat on the end.

I would mix two forged together but not with milled and I would not mix 2 milled together. If you are going to spend the money on milled you might as well get a matched set.

Little update from my experience...got a brand new MI billet upper for my yhm forged lower.

The upper came in yesterday. Being an impatient person, i had to put the upper onto the lower with bcg and charging handle. The fit was initially like a glove. In fact, thepins came together alot better than forged seekins lower to my forged DD upper. then the bcg got stuck as i pulled it back.

LESSON LEARNT...do NOT use the Magpul BAD lever with a billet upper. Because the outer profile of the billet upper around the bolt is not as thin or rounded as the forged, the BAD lever lifts up the part on the lower that holds the bolt back. The side of the billet upper has a recess cut for the bolt catch but it's not big enough to fit the portion of the BAD lever that fit around the "button."

Will do the full install hopefully this weekend but so far looks like this billet and forged mixing is not going to be a problem.

Yep, BAD lever should only be used on forged lowers as I believe external dimensions are a bit larger on billet lowers.
