Gun surface protection - Oiling

What the best to use...currently I have Hoppes - used it for years

Frob Lube did well in those tests and I do use it as a lubricant. But be aware that it has been tested and shown to be coconut oil and almost identical to other less expensive lubes. Also be aware that it can become rancid after a few months and turns hard in cold weather.

I have cut way down on using oil for surface protection after discovering how much better a job a quality wax will do.

Some swear by Johnson's Paste Wax. I haven't tried that brand, but I can testify that Renaissance Wax protects the outer surfaces of a firearm. - Wood, plastic or metal, much better and longer than any oil on the market.

I've seen quite a few firearms over the years which had beautiful walnut stocks ruined by oil. Wax will protect them instead.

My home defense shotgun needed re-oiling every month or so or it would develop surface rust, even when I used Mobile One. I wiped off the oil and applied Renaissance Wax a year ago, and it has not needed any further attention since.

An added bonus is that gun metal treated with wax looks much better than it does with oil. My old shotgun looks like it just came out of the box, to this day.

I have used Breakfree CLP since the early to mid 80's. I have never had a gun rust and I never will. I'll use nothing else. Just my experience over the last 30 years.

What works well for you is the best thing to use. A lot of that will hinge upon your location, how you store your firearms, how much time you are willing to put into maintenance, and where you hunt.

When I lived in deep south Texas, I was at 29 ft. altitude, and was twenty miles inland from the Gulf coast. Rust was a serious issue there.

Now I live 600 miles inland and at 4500 feet, in the mountains of the high Chihuahuan desert. I'm buying a lot more blued firearms and less stainless steel ones, these days.

I agree with that Charlesb...much of that 30 years was also in S. Texas. Granted though if I'm not using a gun it's spending its time in a humidity controlled safe so that more than anything is protecting them.

Yes...keep the choices coming at leat 4-5 options, not all have environmental climate controlled safes or areas. Just trying to see what may be the best choice

Add another vote for paste car wax. I actually slather it on and then just let it dry. I don't bother wiping it or polishing it off. I figure if I got a good thick coating on the barrel, it's not likely to rust underneath there. Every now and then I will polish the old layer off, and put a new layer on. The wax will not hurt wood, plastic, or anything else it might get on.

I use ballistol and have good luck with it. I like the fact that it cleans and lubes.....and wont damage wood and leather.

I've been hearing good reports about wax for years, but never tried it. I lived on the beach for many years, where everything rusted/corroded rapidly. Refrigeration and desiccant dehumidifiers and oil were my friends!

I'm inland now, but it's hard for an old guy to break old habits, but I think I'll try it.
