Remington 700 30-06 replacing the stock - 02/26/16 05:39 PM

I have a remington 700 30-06 and was wanting to change the stock on it as the one it currently has is rough and was looking for ideas on a different one. Also how hard is it to change the stock? Is it something a novice can do and not mess it up?

Just about everybody who makes stocks has a 700 model. Pick what you want to pay, and do a search.

Change out is taking the two action screws out, pulling the barreled action out of the stock and reversing the procedure in the new stock.

Manners MCS-EH1 is expensive, but very tough and very light, 26 ounces.

Two screws and you're done, unless the barrel channel needs clearing. Then some Emory cloth and some elbow grease is the fix.

Sometimes some minor fitting is needed but most "drop in" stocks are a 5 minute job for someone that's done it before.

Eh-1 are nice. If you find one that is not exact you can send them back to manners and they can adjust some things.

Depending on what you want, EBay and Google are your friends to find you some replacement options/good deals.

Is choate a decent brand?

First of all we need to know what the gun is for and your budget?

Do you have and want to spend $200 or $1000

And I would not buy a choate.

Would you just be happy with another clean factory stock or refinishing the present stock? I know there are some very clean factory stocks that have been taken off and standing in a closet or laying under a bed, and some good woodworkers who could refinish your present stock for a very fair price.

That's my choice too. Choates are fine as far as performance, but weigh 5x what they should, and are ugly as sin.

Go with the Bell and Carlson. Best stock for the money. You can find them aluminum bedded for around $240-250 for the standard stock. I have 6 of them in different colors. Takes a couple of minutes to change.
