Upgrades for a Savage Model 12 FV 22-250 ?? - 02/23/16 02:30 PM

I finally snagged the 22-250 from my buddy and he cut me a better deal than I had expected. I removed the Tasco Varmint 6-24x42 scope last night since the rings need replacing and realized what a POS the stock is. I don't know much about Savage rifles in general, but this particular rifle has the 4.25" bolt spacing and the stagger feed blind mag. It will be used for predator hunting and punching some paper, so I'd like a decent stock for it and if possible upgrade the blind mag to a detachable mag system.

Is it possible to upgrade the magazine?
If any of you have the rifle, what stock did you upgrade to?
What length should I cut the barrel down to since I'd like to run it suppressed?

I've got the model 10. All I've done was a HS Precision stock and Dark Eagle 10 round magazine. It doesn't appear that you have the Accutrigger, I'd start with a new trigger

Yes, the trigger is where I would definitely start first.

Do u have the savage stock that has pillar bedding? If not I have an old model 10 stock. It too was a 22-250 with a 26" varmint barrel. It's a blind mag too. Quite honestly, when I went to the hs precison stock I have now, it wasn't that much of an improvement. You can have it if you want a cheap, temporary upgrade in stock. Otherwise, you'd get move value out of a bell and Carlson.

KR, what did you not like about the HS Precision?

Other than the price tag, nothing really.

I have the m24 model with the vertical grip. At the time, my rifle was a blind mag and that was one of the few blind mag full aluminum bedding stock. One small issue was finding a reasonable price for inletting from a complete blind mag. Luckily CDI precison ran a free inletting special.

Other than that, I look at the bell and Carlson stock with same full bedding but with adjustable cheek height and lop would be more useful for the same price. I had to get a Karsten cheek rest. I've shot a couple 700's with that stock. While it weighs more, I don't think the difference in accuracy is something I can notice. My shooting skills, or lack there of, is not razors edge sharp anyways.

Ditto on the trigger. I good gunsmith can tune the stock trigger, or DIY replace it with a decent after market trigger.

Yeah I didn't see an improvement in accuracy over my accustock, but I find it much more comfortable and stiffer. With the accustock I couldn't load a bipod properly without the groups opening up.

Before you swap the trigger out, look and see if you have the 3 screw trigger on that rifle. You can adjust the 3 screw down very lite, and also adjust the creep and over travel better than most aftermarket triggers.
Just make sure that the safety will function 100% after you adjust everything, and also bump test it to make sure the sear setting is safe. I'll take a factory 3 screw trigger over most of the aftermarket jobs.

PTG and CDI make detachable magazine bottom metal for the staggered feed actions. CDI will also inlet your stock for free if you buy from them.

Stocks for the older staggered feed models are getting harder to find, but Choate,Boyds, and a few others still offer them.

I put my savage 22-250 on a MDT LSS short action chassis and added a Mako stock and got some MDT polymer mags (the .308 fits and runs 22-250 flawlessly) for my varmint rifle. It is a heavy son of a gun, and I need to get a bipod for the front since it is quite front heavy with the bull barrel on it, but it is a sweet shooting rig.

Mine has the acutrigger which is fine, but I have another savage (.243 kids gun) I put a timney into and it is nice. Hated the stock trigger on that savage axis .243
