Owning guns is like leasing a vehicle !!!!!! What What!!! - 02/10/16 11:31 PM

It just hit me. I own guns like leasing a car. Except for a couple, I buy guns, enjoy them for 2-3 years, sell them at a slightly depreciated price and go get another.

Anyone else "lease" their guns? paw

Sounds about right. But I am close to getting past that point and buying things I really want.

Mine may be more like a girlfriend. There is always a new sexy fun one out there and I usually have to get rid of the old one to get the new one. smile

I buy them and keep them and plan on leaving them all to my son. I was never handed anything down so I want to leave him as much as I can.

My dad told me you don't sell guns. I wouldn't sell any of mine unless I was in a pretty bad bind.

I only sell guns I hate. That's not very often

Any gun I own that does not have sentimental value will/can get sold. If I kept all my guns, I would have only had a few guns and a boring life. As it is, I've owned every standard battle rifle and pistol for every combatant for every war from the Spanish American war onward. I've owned an extensive collection of WW2 german rifles and pistols and not one but 3 separate WW2 Japanese rifle/pistol/militaria collections. Not to mention collections of pre-ban black rifles, Ruger old model revolvers, and Finish/Russian Mosins...I have no idea how many guns I've owned over the last 40 years. Do I wish I could have kept them all? Hell yeah. I had hundreds of German and Japanese weapons all original, all matching. But at least for me - if I want to buy something I generally have to sell something.

I don't get attached to things. I buy, I play, I get bored, and I sell or trade. Repeat.

I even sell guns to get fishing gear or kayaks at times. flame

Ive bought and sold many over the years. I have some that will never get sold but only because they were gifts. Its pretty rare that Ive made a profit on a gun though. My list of sellable/tradeable guns has also dwindled to a short list now

I've lost money on rifles and optics. Now I buy quality rifle parts that retain most of their value (Manners stocks, CDI bottom metal for instance). I can get most of my money out of them if needed. Finally, I have three rifles that are definitely set up the way I want. All they will ever need is a new barrel, which are like tires on a truck, they're gonna wear out.

One semi-custom rifle may be on the chopping block this year. Again I can get most of my money out of it, use that money to put together something I like better. One other rifle will forever be available for sale for the right price.

+1. I have learned to spend more on something you will keep. If you are wanting to sell that soon you probably didnt think it through

I'm just about the opposite - I have never sold a gun. I have given a few to my kids and grandkids. It might be different if I had more money smile

Just steel to me. I live where I can't test many rifles or handguns so I usually buy and sell quite often. Rifles usually have a shelf life of 6 months around here. And normally I break even, more times than not I come out head.

'Spare' money is so tight for me I don't have the luxury of wasting any on a hasty purchase, so never found myself in op's position. All firearm purchases are well researched and long awaited, so I usually get a pretty good deal on purchase. The one or two I've sold were WORTH (at sold time) quite a bit more than I paid for them.
Money is tight for me because I put every extra penny I can into LAND - what would have been frivolous or ego-serving expenditures over the last 16 years - has now turned into 2 + 7 + 41 acres of LAND I now OWN !!!;-- ThankYou Dave Ramsey!!!!!

Can't imagine selling any of the guns I have. One of these days I'm going to have to figure out what I'm going to do with them.

I know I could make a profit on most of them because I got them as gifts. As for the ones I paid for...
I know I would come out ahead on my Winchester Model 1890. It will be 110 years old next year, still shoots great. I paid $30.00 for it at an estate sale in the mid 1980's.
My Para Ordnance P-14 I might not make money on the gun itself but I have two high capacity mags, and that's where I clean up.

I am pretty well the same way. For me it is the build. Now if I do hit on something special, then I will keep it. I used to do the same thing with drag cars. Build one, fine tune it, race it for a while then build another one. There was a joke at the drag strip about me, " keep an eye on that car going down the track, there is a good possibility that it will be sold half way down and another one built before it gets to the finish line."

I have bought, sold, traded several firearms over the years. (pre FFL days)
Several I would like back, same for cars and motorcycles.
Most of them if I were to repurchase, it would cost me way more than I sold them for!
HK91,Valmet,Delta Elite,Desert Eagle .50AE, '57 Chevy,'34 Plymouth,'69 RS/SS Camaro,'72 Challenger (my first Car)

I have several that will get passed along to my grandkids. But there are others that will stay as long as I like them. I've sold a few and made money on them. I've sold more that I lost money on but I feel I still came out ahead as I did get some enjoyment out of having them and, what's that worth? wink

Sold one in 50 years and have one on hand I might sell if someone came to me looking for it. Most have a special meaning to me.
