Youth Rifle Advice

Any body have any input on a rifle for a girl. My daughter has been through the bb guns and has been accurate and safe with her cricket. This year I let her shoot the 10-22 a few times. She'll be 9 in September. Is she ready for a single shot .410 and .243?

Generally speaking, yes. She's ready. That being said, I don't know your daughter and yalls specific situation. I was shooting a bb gun at 5. 22 at 7 and hunting birds and deer by 8. Always very safe.

Probably. The H&R youth models are good guns, and with the bull barrel, they're not so light that they kick hard. Get some reduced recoil .243 ammo, and see how she takes to that, first.

I was pretty sure about it, just needed a little confirmation. She's a great shooter. I think she is losing interest. I knew the time would come where I would have to talk her into sitting with me. Oh well, she'll be back in 15 years and I still have the younger one who is gung ho.

The remington reduced recoil ammo really work; my son has been using a 30-30 with that ammo and not a problem. He was about 9 when he started shooting the 30-30, very little recoil on a 70's Marlin 336. I've shot the 270 reduced recoil and it's very light as well although he didn't agree as much

Bought granddaughter a Howa youth 243 when she was 9 and she is 11 now. This year she also shot my Howa 308 with a 125 grain bullet. I have had my Howa 308 Ranchland for 5 years now and would not give it up anything and the same goes for the 243. I have shot many a rifle in my lifetime and the Howa's have less recoil than anything I have ever shot right out of the box. Both will shoot clover leafs at 100 yards. The 243 shoots a good verity of ammo. My 308 is picky, Hornady SST or Nossler Ballistic Tips.

I would look hard at the new Howa mini action chambered in 6.5 Grendel.

Agree, have a CZ 527 custom in the Grendel, the more I shoot it the more I like it. If I had known about the Howa being brought out this year I probably would not have built the CZ last year.

Ammo is available from several manufactures now with more to be available in the future. Have seen the Wolf Steel cased rounds for as low as 9.99. Hornady, PPU, Wolf, and Federal all offer factory ammo for it, in addition to Alexander Arms and precision firearms. Recoil is noticeably less than the 243 and would not hesitate to use mine to 400 yards on whitetail.

I bought my oldest daughter a browning xbolt micro Midas in .243 -- great little gun. Bought my middle daughter a tikka t3 in 243 -- I like it even better.
