What model did I end up with here?

What model did I end up with here? - 01/06/16 06:19 PM

I walked into my LGS and spotted this lonely model 70 on the shelf. Cheap factory tupperware, nothing fancy at all. Talked with the dealer, thinking it would make a good donor rifle. Walked out for a bit over 3 bills.

So, other than a New Haven Mod. 70 22", what did I get?

And yes, I've made the mistake of shooting the donor. hammer bang

Has a G pre-fix on the serial number. I'm guessing it is some sort of 'Shadow' variation? What say you folks?

It's gonna kick!

Looks like one of the Black Shadow models from the early 2000's. Push feed economy version that they sold for awhile. Nothing wrong with a push feed Model 70.

Cast - they all 'kick'. This one isn't too bad! Works better than the Mountain rifle I have as far as recoil and my shoulder are concerned.

Texasteach - thanks, I think you're spot on with that. Probably be looking for a new stock for this critter.

Mine kicked so hard I opted to change the stock which fixed it right up. Those light plastic stocks are just placeholders on a 30-06.

But I'm a wuss...

The bare rifle weighed in at 8.2 lbs. I've been working on a load with 4064 and recoil hasn't caused my shoulder any problems. I had to get rid of my Blaser 300 WM due this shoulder. I replaced it with a 264 WM. Recoil is much tamer.

This Win stock has what appears to be one of the softer recoil pads on it. That might be a difference.

You got a base model New Haven built Winchester from back when they were solid pieces of equipment...with an "open" trigger that can easily be cleaned or tuned and wing 3 position safety that's the best thing on the market. This is a good platform for a re barrel LA caliber change if you wanted it ...or a super "beater/truck/paddle the pirouge gun" as is that'll last you the rest of your life.

Because it's LA action, this'un be perfect for doing a 6.5x'06/338'06/35 Whelen & my fav oddball in a 9.3x62 yadda yadda or some other version of a 308 based caliber where the bullets can be seated WAAAY out there like a 243 aka 6mmx'06...and dirt simple to do without the CRF extractor.

Only thing I'd need xtra if I changed the stock out'd be the bottom metal floor plate & follower, and prolly a Boyd's wood or laminate drop in stock of my choice. Nice snag.

You got a great deal!! Nice rifle great all around caliber. First, clean the hell out of it inside and out then Ditch the scope, get a new Leupold VX-3 (all on sale right now at Natchez) The Vortex Viper is on sale for about $300 everywhere.

I like the idea of adding a Boyds wood stock or maybe an HS Precision, get it bedded. Then if your anal like most of us, replace the trigger with a Timney.

OR, just clean the hell out of it and ENJOY!!!!

I seem to see this line used with some frequency on other sites, particularly with Model 70s.

The Swarovski stays. it was the last scope my Dad purchased.

I've been playing with some 4064 and 165 SGK's and getting 3 shot groups around an inch. Picked up some of the 4451 and 7977 to play with as well. With a bum shoulder this rifle has so far exceeded my needs. Now, with the right load, it can exceed my desires as well laugh

If you have it, try IMR 4350. My go-to '06 load in my T3 is a book dose of IMR 4350 under a 165 grain SGK.
.70" groups and hits like a freakin' freight train.

tth_40, that's what I normally used. With a bum shoulder, the freight train hit on both ends. The 4064 loads weren't too bad, but I'm still working on accuracy load for it as well as will try out some 4451 and 7977.

Ahh sorry, I forgot about that. I have shoulder issues as well, and had to swap out stocks on my T3 to a B&C with a Limbsaver pad to calm the recoil some. cheers

I have had the same gun in 270 for I think about fifteen years. I never knew what they called it. With a Vari-X II 3x9 and 130 gr. Core-Lokts it would on occasion put three either inside of, or maybe have one cutting the line, of a quarter at 100 yards. In my book that is A-O-K for a cheap gun and cheap ammo.

I have since moved it to the back of the safe after acquiring a Sako A7 in 270. I don't know that I shoot the Sako any better. Just found a deal on it.

That "ditch the scope" comment was a joke, right?
