Howa Mini Action

Howa Mini Action - 01/06/16 05:50 PM

I picked up a Howa Mini Action .223 yesterday from my local gun shop. I went home last night immediately started looking for rings and bases. I couldn't find anything for the Mini Action. Does it use the same pattern as a Short Action Howa. I was just curious if anyone else on here had one and could help me out.

Thanks,
Lab

2 piece bases for the Remington 700 will work for your mini action Howa. I do not know of any one piece bases available yet to fit it.

I once owned a CZ mini-Mauser in .222 Rem and will note that with the rings so close together due to the tiny action, not all scopes are going to work out OK.

In my case a Nikon Buckmaster 4-16 (I think it was) could not be mounted far enough forward. - i always had to rare my head back in an uncomfortable position in order to get a good sight picture.

Other scopes I tried worked out just fine.

I'm saying this as a warning that you might want to take the rifle with you when shopping for a scope, see if you can try before you buy. - They usually won't let you take it home, and then bring it back if the fit is not right.

Asking around to see what works out best on the Mini-Mausers might be a good idea too, I wish I had done that.

Soon we'll have data from Howa Mini Action owners to go by.

Easy way around the mounts being too close is to use offset rings with the 2 piece bases, might not look the coolest in the world but does work. There is already a bloke in Australia making one piece bases for the mini actions, doubt it will be long before one of the specialty manufactures like DIP will be making them it they aren't already

That or increase the length of pull to something that fits a full size man not a 12yr old boy. It's funny how a guy can mount a shotgun with 14 1/2" LOP, but then shoot a rifle with a 13"-13 1/2" lop

My CZ mini-Mauser had a standard length of pull, I had the varmint model with the graphite/kevlar stock.

The extended rings don't look so bad to me. They were not an option on the CZ with its proprietary scope mounting system, but on the Howa Mini-Action, this is not a problem.

The rifle I have seemed to have a standard length of pull. I didn't look it up to be specific. Was hoping to use it as a truck/RZR gun. Probably end up with a 3-9x40 on there. Looks like I'll be going with two piece bases. Since that's all that's available. I can't wait to shoot it.

Only thing I didn't like is the stock. If I could compare it to another gun stock it would be the ruger American or savage axis. Hopefully soon someone will come out with a decent stock for it. Overall the action seems like any old Howa. Trigger doesn't have any creep to it. Nice decent probably 4 pound pull, but I'm sure it's adjustable.

I'm waiting for the day they come out in one in 6.5 Grendel or 6.8 SPC. I will be owning another one!

It's my opinion that most rifle stocks from the factory are too short. That's what I was getting at.

The price is right on that item, too. Thanks for the tip, now I'm more interested in trying another CZ Mini.

It will have to wait until I've tried the Howa first, though. I'll have to admit that if the Howa strikes me as being significantly better, the chances of another CZ mini here will diminish.

I'm just guessing, but my guess is that the Howa action will cycle easier and more naturally due to the bolt handle design. On the CZ Mini, the bolt handle and knob are a little too 'mini' for my big mitts. - I end up using my thumb and finger instead of my hand.

Others have run into the same problem with their CZ 527s here is one of their solutions. Currently out but bet the make more.
