Just curious why you'd limit the muzzle velocity if your only shooting to 300 yards.not much to be gained or lost at that short distance

I think it's about the higher fps rounds damaging the steel.
Posted By: J.G.

Re: Third Annual THF Hunter Rifle Challenge, Sat. Feb. 6 - 12/25/15 05:08 PM

^^Exactly right^^

A 55 gr. 223 will damage steel, inside 400 yards, where as a 210 gr .300 Win Mag will not.

High speed bullets divet steel, energy does not. I've never tried it, but I'm pretry sure that 3/8" AR 500 rigid mounted and a tack driving .223. If A guy can stack shots the bullet will eventually punch through.

You can, but if you're going to get up early and drive you might as well shoot it. This is not a high speed, precision, long range match. Most everyone can do fairly well. No one is going to make fun of you if you zero every single stage. They, and I, will help you throughout the day.

Gary

Yes. If you have a rifle, I would recommend signing up and bringing it to shoot. I will even offer up my 270 Win for use if someone needs a rifle to shoot. There will be some shooters who shoot a lot, there will be some shooters who shoot a little bit, and there will be some shooters who shoot from a bench at 100 yards and want to do something more than that. There will be a varying amount of skilled shooters attending. The match is full of laughter and good times. I have a great time at these events. I'm sure someone can find some threads from the previous matches we have held to show you an idea of what we do and some of the stages we shoot. You will need about 50-60 rounds of ammo.

Re: Third Annual THF Hunter Rifle Challenge, Sat. Feb. 6 - 12/29/15 01:29 AM

What size will the targets be? Are rangefinders allowed? Would a .223 and 62grain fmj be ok? And how does the scoring work?
Posted By: J.G.

Re: Third Annual THF Hunter Rifle Challenge, Sat. Feb. 6 - 12/29/15 01:36 AM

Targets are generally 1 1/2 to 2 MOA, some even larger. You can bring any glass you want, but distance is given on every stage. .223 62 gr FMJ is fine as along as it is under 3100 fps MV. Each stage has X amount of points for hits depending on distance, shooting position, and target size. There is no stage that you can go negative points. You can zero a stage from missing several times, and on one stage you can gain points, but if you miss one time you just lost all you accumulated.

So a point for hitting it, 5 for spinning it?
Posted By: J.G.

Re: Third Annual THF Hunter Rifle Challenge, Sat. Feb. 6 - 12/30/15 12:28 AM

Yes. 1 point per hit, max of three. Make it make a rev and you get five. The only way to get five is to hit it three times consecutively.

Re: Third Annual THF Hunter Rifle Challenge, Sat. Feb. 6 - 01/02/16 07:26 PM

I know you don't know round count...but do you try to do less than X amount of shots per stage to nulify hardware differences? IE my hunting gun is 3+1 you are not going to have a stage with 10 called shots
Posted By: KRoyal

Re: Third Annual THF Hunter Rifle Challenge, Sat. Feb. 6 - 01/02/16 07:30 PM

I don't know the round counts for this one, but in the past there are a few stages like the spinner where you'll shoot 5 shots, but some guys top load the whole time, the time given on each stage is very generous.

Re: Third Annual THF Hunter Rifle Challenge, Sat. Feb. 6 - 01/02/16 07:52 PM

Korean redneck was shooting a 300WM last year and it took 3 rounds to spin it. Took me 4 out of my 16" 308. I shot it with my bolt gun and it took me 3 rounds I think, can't really remember because on last shot I spun the bottom plate completely off and broke it bolt lol talk about an awkward call to Jason lol.

Re: Third Annual THF Hunter Rifle Challenge, Sat. Feb. 6 - 01/07/16 11:55 PM

I could damn sure hit a pug with it , whatever a pug is ???

But really, BP, I'm torn between my AR and bolt gun too. I have a 1-6 on the AR. I might bring both and check out the 6X before the match.

I wonder it the Nosler 64gr bonded could spin that mfer????

What do you jokers want for the prize table? Thinking we need a trophy as well, maybe a Stanley cup type scenario
Posted By: BigPig

Re: Third Annual THF Hunter Rifle Challenge, Sat. Feb. 6 - 01/08/16 01:56 AM

Stanley Cup idea is great! I think a fire pit or voucher towards something else is fair. Since you have the fancy cutting machine, a THF emblem for each shooter would be cool,

Ferris wheel is just one stage don't be a chicken. I barely got it to spin two years ago with my 7mm08 but could not get it done last year.

Re: Third Annual THF Hunter Rifle Challenge, Sat. Feb. 6 - 01/11/16 11:28 PM

My little .223 wont spin it but I can maybe hit it three times before time runs out.

These are ALL really fun stages and well within the skills of us "normal" shooters, not like the 800yd tactical match, which I spent most of the day watchin, very fun none the less

FWIW, a cute little gal, wife of one of the shooters, did VERY well with a BONE STOCK Savage .243!!! Plastic stock and all YEP, UH HUH, she BAD!!!

I'm trying. But this is the special time of year when Texas shows how much she loves me and sends Mountain Cedar pollen from down south. Some days my left knee is twice normal size; somedays it is just annoyingly stiff. Is there a medically limited handicap scoring? Or will someone volunteer to drag me thru the mud and drop me off at the shooting stages. Yeeehaw!

I'll haul your body stage to stage so's you can shoot. And keep an IV running in you so I can administer Benadryl 25 mg, once per hour.

The furthest you will walk is from the zero line down to about the 650 or 700 yard line. And then slowly make your way back as we shoot stages.

Haha, maybe. I could get a smoker in a trailer if needed but would need somebody to tow it from Forney. Something simple like burgers and baked beans. Just a thought

Re: Third Annual THF Hunter Rifle Challenge, Sat. Feb. 6 - 01/15/16 08:28 PM

I can make a place to cook, just need someone to do the cooking. Maybe when we're getting close someone can build a fire, I even have the wood. Then shooters can tend to it when they're not shooting. My hands will be full with everything else if someone else can bring the groceries.

If we can get a plan together I'll bring the smoker, we can grill on it too. But I need somebody to tow it for me as I will have another trailer hooked to my truck. Tables would be great too.

It can but the flat bed doesn't have a hitch, or wiring for another trailer. Guess I could work on that, but I don't want too.

Alternator on a tractor is a pretty easy fix. Get on it. Don't make me bring my Gator out there.
Posted By: J.G.

Re: Third Annual THF Hunter Rifle Challenge, Sat. Feb. 6 - 01/17/16 04:48 PM

I put an alternator and batteries on it in June. It must have a wire issue. Hate running that crap down!
Posted By: Cast

Re: Third Annual THF Hunter Rifle Challenge, Sat. Feb. 6 - 01/17/16 04:58 PM

It's just one wire running from ignition and the big wire to the battery. You can handle this. I replaced the wiring harness on my tractor so I got it all in my head.

But having said that, my ignition circuit relay quit and I ain't fixed that either. I feel your pain.
Posted By: J.G.

Re: Third Annual THF Hunter Rifle Challenge, Sat. Feb. 6 - 01/17/16 05:21 PM

Three wires, all original (39 years old). I have lots of stranded wire in the shop, so I am running new ones from point A to point B no matter what.

I keep telling myself that fixing up a classic Deere 4430 still beats a payment on a newer one. Even then I couldn't afford a 130 horse tractor that's less then ten years old.

Re: Third Annual THF Hunter Rifle Challenge, Sat. Feb. 6 - 01/17/16 05:42 PM

Jason has it got a small wire to the alternator, or just the big ones? I had that switch go out on the 706 and had to replace it. The whole new alternator was same price, and had a warranty.
Posted By: J.G.

Re: Third Annual THF Hunter Rifle Challenge, Sat. Feb. 6 - 01/17/16 06:05 PM

One 6 ga. (or larger), and two 14 ga. Once I finish replacing cab bushings I am going take the hood off and see if I can replace all those wires with new ones. They are a bit crusty from all those years of engine heat.

I won't be able to make it this year. My gun club (Brazos Valley Service Rifle Association) is having a special guest and annual meeting that day. The guest has won numerous Garand and service rifle championships and he's putting on a clinic. Something I don't want to miss. Maybe I can make the summer one this year....that'll give me more time to get my rig ready!

Y'all have fun!

cheers

Those Garand's will cause a problem...not enough room in the safe for more.

I must have gotten married the wrong day, because every year our anniversary trip conflicts with this.

I may just have to get JG up here to shoot in this wide open country sometime. Lots of canyons, lots of wind, can stretch it out as far as a person wants.

Re: Third Annual THF Hunter Rifle Challenge, Sat. Feb. 6 - 01/29/16 02:35 PM

Say when. I shoot The Heat Stroke Open every year, near Camargo, OK. And go prairie dog killin in the panhandle every year. I love going west! Exactly as you say, you can fling lead farther than it will stay supersonic.
Posted By: JTPinTX

Re: Third Annual THF Hunter Rifle Challenge, Sat. Feb. 6 - 01/29/16 02:44 PM

I keep saying I am going to make it up to the Heat Stroke sometime just to watch, but haven't yet.

I am right over here in the SE corner of the panhandle, so probably about a 5 hour drive for you. I have about 10,000 acres I call coyotes on, and a lot of it is really good for stretching distance out. I have a decent amount of portable steel too. After turkey season we can use my BIL's place too, it has some nice places to shoot.

Re: Third Annual THF Hunter Rifle Challenge, Sat. Feb. 6 - 02/01/16 11:22 PM

Walking on the range- The water crossing at the 100 yard line is still under water as of Thursday last week ( Jan 28). It's a little soft around the 200-500 yard area. I'd wear some shoes you do not mind getting muddy. There are areas you can walk without getting muddy, but there may be a few soft areas.

Buzz- DO NOT TAKE CR 3805, again, DO NOT TAKE CR 3805!!!!!!!!!!!
3805 is the CR that connects to Hwy 11, but when it's wet, like now, it's near impassable.
I go 121 to Hwy 11, then come down 3830 to 3835 to the range. That's a good way.

Range Directions from 75:

Take SH 121 north east towards Bonham

Exit State Hwy 11 (in Randolph), and Go East on SH 11, pass through the intersection of SH 11 and SH 78, and continue on Hwy 11 through Bailey.

In 2.5 miles turn south onto Fannin CR 3830.

3830 turns back to the east, then go right onto CR 3835, you'll be headed southbound

Stay on CR 3835, and cross over the intersection of CR 3805

Range is 1/4 mile further south of 3805, on the east side of CR 3835

Big Ole entryway that says Garvey on top, you can't miss it! If you get to CR 1013, you've gone too far.

The range is on CR 3835, between CR 3805 and CR 1013.

DO NOT TAKE CR 3805, again, DO NOT TAKE CR 3805!!!!!!!!!!! This road is near impassable when it's wet.

Think theres a spot for a walk on? A friend of mine is trying to talk me into it. I intended on going anyways just to video him shooting the course, but he does a good job of convincing me of separating me from my money at times.

My few hangups are, I am normally a prone shooter and dont even have a sling for my rifle. I do not know the course of fire, and cannot find it anywhere, so I feel like I am already at 2 disadvantages and will not even be competitive.

Can anyone shed some light?
Posted By: Big Fitz

Re: Third Annual THF Hunter Rifle Challenge, Sat. Feb. 6 - 02/04/16 03:19 AM

CSD, Course of fire will be provided the morning of the shoot. I can bring a couple of extra slings for anyone needing one. Plan to shoot, it will be fun!

Mike, that is a cool looking disc cooker!

Re: Third Annual THF Hunter Rifle Challenge, Sat. Feb. 6 - 02/04/16 03:20 AM

You don't get course of fire until the morning of the shoot. The RO's do a great job of explaining everything and gives everyone ample time to get ready and shoot. I'm mostly a prone shooter, but there isn't many of the shots that are truly off hand shots or at least in the past.

Re: Third Annual THF Hunter Rifle Challenge, Sat. Feb. 6 - 02/04/16 03:21 AM

It's a mix of everything that one would might actually shoot from in a hunting situation. Some stages you can pick your favorite style some you can't. It is not hard or physical
You don't need a sling
Fair mix of off hand , sitting, prone

Re: Third Annual THF Hunter Rifle Challenge, Sat. Feb. 6 - 02/04/16 03:24 AM

Forgot, who all is bringing what for cooking burgers after the shoot? I'm signed up for paper plates, paper towels and cups. What I've seen so far is:

Beef, Brandon S.
Paper plates, towels, cups, Fitz
Buns?
Condiments?
Grill?
What else?

Re: Third Annual THF Hunter Rifle Challenge, Sat. Feb. 6 - 02/04/16 03:27 AM

Thank you all for the replies. I feel very confident off prone, but my rifle isnt really set up for anything else. Not saying im not adaptable, just never done it with this heavy pig of a 6.5.

I still havent learned if walk-ons are allowed though. A little insight on that would be cool. Regardless I will be there to video ImTheReasonDovesMourn shoot. Ill go ahead and have a 50 on me just in case.

Yes, we should have enough room for a walk on. COF will be given to you the morning of. If the stage allows it, we will allow you to shoot from a shooting bench or prone. Some stages will be shot from a predetermined position. If you have a good 100 yard zero (or 200), you will do fine. The stages are geared for easier shots first, and more difficult at the end. We gear it where shooters will get some hits, and have some challenging shots also. It is a good time match! Send me a PM or give me your email address, and I will send you the match details.

SHOOTERS- if you did not get an email with the match details, please send me a PM or drop me an email so I can get you the match details.

Re: Third Annual THF Hunter Rifle Challenge, Sat. Feb. 6 - 02/07/16 01:31 PM

I would like to thank Chad for encouraging this rookie to bring a rifle and shoot. Things I learned:

1) It always rains at JG's place; be prepared. As a rookie I didn't know I would be the only person with an umbrella. I learned long ago those cheap umbrellas make good, quick improvised shelters.

2) Every bad shooting habit you have will show up at a shoot. Every limitation of your gun you had accepted will become unacceptable. But, you won't realize how bad they are till you go on a shoot.

3) Those 3 round mags which are perfect for hunting really suck shooting the Ferris wheel and gophers.

4) 1 minute shooting rounds are plenty of time to shoot unless you get in a panic. Keep calm, aim, and shoot on

5) It always rains at JG's place. Mud is reality.

Thanks again for letting a rookie shoot.

I want to thank everyone for being safe, and for having patience with target malfunctions, and the mud. Everyone went home with no extra holes in them, and I hope everyone had fun, and maybe learned a thing or two. I went to bed at 9 and woke up at 7, I was whooped!

Next time the food will be near the platform and we will cycle people through between stages. The weather put us running behind all day long. It had not rained out there in more than ten days.

I cause it to rain by scheduling a match. bang

If it quits right now, it would be three months before I can get my dirt work done. Maybe I will schedule one for August.

Had a great time as always and big thank you to Brandon for the burgers sorry I forgot to tell everyone there was tomato and onion under all the lettuce lol got one really big salad left over haha. Big thank you to Jason and Chad as always fun match. I got beat by chads son Lane, and wasn't using Chads ammo this time so can't blame that, it's gotta be the gun. Time for a new gun lol.

Thank you brother in law (princess Patrick) for being my cheerleader this year it really helped out. Haha

Is like to thank Jason and Chad for running a great match again. Brandon for doing the cooking even though I had to eat on the run, and Mike for pulling out the "Beached Whale." Sadly I was the only one that had to be recovered from Jason's strategically placed mud.

Just a business idea for Jason "Rainman" Garvey, you have a great future in the farming/ranching industry during droughts. Landowners can hire you to schedule a rifle competition at their ranch and the clouds will open up...problem solved!

You could make a fortune, especially in California. Note, since this is my idea, I should get a cut of the business. Just a thought.... grin

Agreed, or make a really big one and have people's names put on it and have it on display no guarantee you'll have same people come out from year to year to pass it on.

Guys and gals, I had a great time!!! Thank you for a very safe match!! I love helping Jason run these matches. I like seeing shooters out of their comfort zone off a bench at 100 yards. I love hearing the comments from each shooter on how they need to work on this or that. It was a fun day!!

Thank you shooters for the great comments. I'll post some pictures also.

Re: Third Annual THF Hunter Rifle Challenge, Sat. Feb. 6 - 02/08/16 06:46 PM

I gotta brag for a minute. My son, Lane, who's 10 years old shot his first real shooting match. He ended up finishing tied for 8th out of 30 shooters in this match. He rocked the suppressed Tikka 223 shooting 65 grain Sierra Gamekings at 2948 fps. He's running a simple Leupold 3-9 with some MOA target turrets. He was one of the 3 shooters who cleaned the know your limits stage. Here's some pics.

Re: Third Annual THF Hunter Rifle Challenge, Sat. Feb. 6 - 02/08/16 09:06 PM

I cannot thank Jason and Chad enough for what I experienced at this event last weekend. I have never shot past 100 yds and brought a rifle that had never even been zero'd to this shindig. With help from both I managed to get it lined up and convert my MIL dope to MOA as I had no clue what I had when I showed up. Shooting factory ammo with a gun I had never really had a chance to get behind I managed to string together numerous hits including 3/5 at 300 yards and I managed the dreadful spinner. It was an incredible experience even though I was nervous as hell when the rain finally let up and we got started. I just knew I was going to make a complete idiot of myself in front of all these people but that was not the case. cheers

Precision match maybe in August,if there is enough interest. May do another Hunter's match in mid September if there is enough interest, there as well.

Last year everyone was worried about it being too hot in August, and I tried to assure everyone they would be in the shade almost all day. I think many people didn't believe me and decided not to shoot in 90+ weather. Sure enough, the guys that showed up were not over heated, and stayed in the shade all day, all of them saying the weather was not a problem.
