Help with subtention

Ok... in the stand... reading about this scope. Leupold 3x9x40. It has the RBR reticle. And I find a sebtention sheet with every reticle on it. An all it says is "dots represent 200,300,400,500" on a 200 yard zero...

Bs... not calibre specific nothing... can sombody figure out the actual subtext ions so I have a clue on what yardage they will hit...

Yes. Go to this weblink below, and follow on page 2. Look at the column LR Duplex 3-9. The MOA @ high mag is for the 9 power setting.

On 9x power, your dots will subtend from dead center:

2.19 moa for the first dot (maybe close to 300 yards)
4.80 moa for the second dot (maybe close to 400 yards)
7.82 moa for the top of the post (maybe close 500 yards)

So, run the numbers on your ammo with the bullet you are shooting, and come up with a drop chart in MOA. Once you have this data, compare it to the drop chart you made, and it will allow you to have holds for your ammo. Most BDC type reticles hardly ever line up perfect, so just learn where to hold at 200, 300 and 400 yards, and it will work for you. This is how I use my 5.56 reticle on my AR out to 800 yards.

If you tell me what ammo and bullet you are running, I can get you close the distance on what each dot will be.

In the future, you can make a target at 100 yards with lines every inch using a fat Sharpie. Measure what eachBDC line is compared to the lines you made on the target. This would translate into MOA which can be used in a ballistic calculator.

OK... Chad, I'm shooting Federal Premium Vital shock. Its a 95 grain Nosler ballistic tip. 3025 per Nosler website, have never actually cronoed it...

With a MILdot just make the lines 3.5" (3.47) apart???

3.6" at 100 yards

1 Mil is 1 yard tall at 1000 yards horizontal
1 Mil is .5 yard tall at 500 yards horizontal
1 Mil is .1 yard tall at 100 yards horizontal

One yard is 36", so 1/10 yard is 3.6"

3.6" tall = 1.0 Mil at 100 yards.

I'm assuming this is a 243 Win? If so, here's what I'm seeing should get you close. This is with a 200 yard zero.

301 yards for the first dot
400 yards for the second dot
495 yards for the top of the post

So, it looks to be really close. But you will need to verify these drops. If the velocity is slower/faster, you will need to adjust the holds.

No, but you can use the Nikon SpotOn app, plug in the load you're using and it will give you the subtensions at a given power at given ranges.

For instance, at 12x with the 129gr Superformance SST, if zeroed at 100 the four circles are 217, 322, 414 and 540 and the top of the post is 652.

yeah it is 243 Winchester... Nothing special... I'm SHOCKED it is so close. I need to borrow a chrono and verify speed.
