Looking at 10mm handguns - 11/29/15 03:04 PM

what do you think about the new glock G40 or Rock island tac ultra?

I'd pick the glock over the rock island

Is your budget set?

I like the Glock with the reflex sight mounting holes.

If it were my money, I would buy the Dan Wesson, Razorback or the STI gun.

Glock 40 (~$700)...This is the one I would prefer due to the longer sight radius.

Arsmcor / RI (~$600)

Dan Wesson Silverback (~$1,800).

The Rock Island is a good gun. I don't own a 10mm but have the 22TCM. It is heavy but it's also all metal. The trigger is great, to me much better than a Glock. And the adjustable rear sight beats the Glock sights. For a budget friendly 10mm that's the one I would choose

I'd go for the RIA. Here are a couple other models to look at.

Re: Looking at 10mm handguns - 11/29/15 05:58 PM

I had a glock 20 for a while I put Dawson precision adj sights on it and a 6"bbl, it really came to life then. However I just couldn't get over how odd it looked with the extra 2" of barrel exposed. I really like the 1911 but the price point is much higher except for RIA.
Para ordnance has a hunter series out, but I think Para is have problems financially.

I'd go with the Glock and put a Zev trigger in it.

My favorite 10mm, the Colt Double Eagle, has been out of production for some time.

Re: Looking at 10mm handguns - 11/29/15 07:03 PM

I recently shot G20 and have to say I really appreciate how the wider grip and polymer construction take a lot of the sting out of the 10mm. I'm not sure I'd like the feel of the steel on steel percussion of a 1911 slide thrusting against a steel frame with shuch force. Extra heavy recoil springs and a shock buffer might prevent it, but I imagine a 1911 in 10mm could feel like whacking an oak stump with a piece of rebar.

I thought the G20 was very enjoyable to shoot while also being very impressed with the fireball and noise created by the very serious 10mm round. One of those with an RMR and a ZEV trigger could be just the ticket to get me into handgun hunting.

Re: Looking at 10mm handguns - 11/29/15 11:01 PM

1. Even the ZEV Fulcrum Ultimate trigger is not as good as most stock 1911 triggers.
2. Para has been bought by Freedom Group, and will be sold under the Remington name.
3. The added weight of the steel frame takes out much more recoil than the "flex" that a polymer frame supposedly has. Shoot a Glock 22 and then pick up a 1911 in .40. Tell me which one has less felt recoil.

Get a colt delta elite and be done with it. You will never regret that one. I've shot several different 10mms and prefer the delta to any of them. The rock island was a close second.

Dan Wesson Razorback. $1400. Dead accurate. Great recoil for a 10mm. This is my favorite gun but it's so nice I TRY not to shoot it. I'm looking to get a second so I can hunt with it. I promise you wouldn't regret it.

I have enjoyed shooting my G40. Used to have the G20 and loved it, like the G40 better. With hat being said, I would love to have a Dan Wesson Razorback 10mm as well. he G40 is a keeper.

Have Colt Delta elite listed in the classifieds. It's a pretty sweet shooter

I think ChadTRG had a couple of these Glocks for sale. These are cool but I agree with a poster above, for DEAD accuracy , you will never beat a tuned 1911 trigger

LOVE the Dan Wessons, GOOGLE, Razor Dobbs, he's goofy but is DEADLY accurate on game with his Dan Wesson 10mm, while you're at it if you REALLY want to drool, look at the Dan Wesson TITAN.

I agree that a professionally tuned 1911 trigger is usually better than a ZEV trigger, but the other poster claimed that most stock 1911 triggers are better than the ZEV trigger. I totally disagree with that. I've shot a BUNCH of springfields, kimbers, colts, and several others (worked at a gun range) with factory triggers that didn't even come close to the ZEV in my glock, or even the Apex trigger in my M&P 45.

How does the G40 group for you?

Not bad, just been shooting at 10" steel targets a long ranges and have no issue hitting them. Did shoot one 25 yard group on paper it it was more than satisfactory for me (a couple of inches with no rest), I need to shoot again on paper to see what it is capable of. I will look to lighten the trigger a bit.

But then there is this jewel. Really thinking of throwing the Kimber on the chopping block so I can buy this

Haven't ever shot the ZEV trigger but I take your word for it. Springer Precision did a great trigger job on my XDm, 9mm.

That has been on my list since I heard the product announcement. Just need a new RF and Chrono first.

The ZEV trigger does wonders for Glocks.. but it's nowhere near a good single action trigger.

If you're on a budget, EAA Witness might be another one to look at.

1911 vs Glock argument will never die. G40 w/RMR is in my truck, will get sighted in tomorrow, I don't know another weapon that compares, (considering my use).

Hijack for a cool photo..Speaking about 10's, my buddy pulled this one out last night. It's a Leupold Gasser from the Hungarian Army.
