Vortex Viper PST 4x16x50 FFP

Vortex Viper PST 4x16x50 FFP - 11/29/15 02:18 AM

Is this scope overkill for my .270 Browning A-Bolt shooting primarily under 300 yds? I hesitated on a big buck at 300 yds with my 3x9 bc I wasn't confident with the scope and don't want that to happen again. I do like having the option to shoot fourth if I wanted with this scope as well.

I run the same scope on my .308 and most of my shots are 100-150 yards, so personally I would say no. I have areas I hunt that can present shots out to 700, so I want the option for longer shots. I'd never shoot a deer at those ranges, but wouldn't hesitate on coyotes and pigs.

Not overkill IMO but there are way better scopes to be had for the money than that. Id look at a zeiss conquest HD 3-15x42 or even a leupold vx3 4.5-4x40 with cds. You can get the leupold for #350 after mail in rebate thru tomorrow I believe from cabelas.

Not overkill. You could save a few bucks and drop down to the 2.5-10X in second focal plane. Yes the reticle will only be correct at 10X, but if you're shooting that far, you'll be at 10X anyway. Zero it at 100, it will be .4 Mil at 200, and .8-1.0 Mil at 300. Dial it, or hold it. But if you hold elevation, you have to be at 10X for those holds to be correct. With a little practice, 300 yards won't seem very far of a shot. I know you've shot irons farther than that in the Army, but now you're trying to hit smaller. The 4-16X or 2.5-10X will both make the task pretty easy. If you ever decide to shoot hogs and coyotes even farther you'll be set up for it.

The power will be perfect for that rifle at those distances, and I will be putting the Vortex 4-16x50 on my Rem 270 this off season. I won't be running the PST because I don't want exposed windage so I'm buying this one

Not my favorite of reticles, but it will work.

Did you get hooked up with your discount from them?

Thanks for the info guys. Im pretty set on Vortex bc of their Military discount and also want an FFP with Mil turrets so I think it will be a good fit but may do like BigPig and get the one without exposed windage.

I have that same scope on my 260, and I really do like it. And I have the Leupold VX3 4.5-14 on my 270 and 223 and like them also. I bought the PST primarily for pigs and coyotes at 300 yards and further. But you do need a good rangefinder. Yesterday afternoon, in the gloom and steady rain, I had about 15 big black hogs come strolling out in the hay field. They were well out past a marker I know to be 250 and the dang RF just would NOT give me a reading. I've shot critters out there before, so I went with 400 yards, made the clicks and proceeded to miss. What I don't have is a real good RF. I have a Nikon 600, which on its best day will range a coyote to 400 yards.

No point in the turrets if you don't know the range, and that is even more true out past 400.

Yep, I know...I need a good RF...I know...

Or learn to use the reticle and a little math for ranging, for when the RF fails.

Re: Vortex Viper PST 4x16x50 FFP - 11/29/15 03:48 AM

Use this
Object size (in) divided by 36 x 1000 divided by mils read

So the average wild hog in Texas stands 1.8-3.6 feet tall (according to T&M)
So let's call it 3 ft or 36 inches, and reading 2.5mils
36 divided by 36 X 1000= 1000/2.5 = 400yds

Re: Vortex Viper PST 4x16x50 FFP - 11/29/15 04:02 AM

I figured you guys would bring that up. What I didn't say earlier is that the hogs were on the other side of a slight rise, and appeared to have no legs. I could see the bodies of the big ones and half the upper bodies of the smaller ones. I'm pretty good with math, but didn't have all day to make the shot and do the math.

The good news is that I caught them in the side yard tonight and got two of them with my 223. See the hog & varmint section. 80 yards. The math was easy...:-)

So what rings should I get for my Browning A-Bolt and the 4x16x50 PST?

I have the same scope on my Remington 700 7mm mag. I used Burris XTR rings on mine.

For a hunting rifle that doesn't need a 20moa base I like the simplicity of the DNZ game reaper. I did the work for you and suggest the medium height rings. Shorts and you may not be able to get a lense cover on.

You already have a scope, so what base are you using now?

The ones I'm using now I don't even remember the brand but I think maybe leupold 2 piece low rings. They are 1 in so I have to change the rings to go to this new scope. I like the idea of a one piece.

I checked out the 2.5x10 PST. Never looked through a FFP before. Pretty sweet! I'm thinking the x16 will take you well past 300yrds.

Bought the 4x12 BDC cause I'm not smart enough to use the PST...

I have this scope. It has been good on the range and hunting. Has held zero and returned to zero for the SMALL amount of dialing I have done.

I am not totally impressed with the light transmission on higher powers, and I feel like my 20 year old leupold vx-II may even do a little better on the light transmission at lower powers as well, but other than that I cant complain.

I've got the FFP 2.5-10x32 on my AR, it's a gem.
