I'm a 300 Savage fan. I have owned a Sav 99 but it was traded for something a while back. My favorite is a '49 Rem 722.
With handloads and in a bolt action, the cartridge can be an equal to the 308 Win. The Sav 99 has some OAL limitation that might prevent the use of heavy bullets but that is the real rub of the 300 compared to the 308. Not enough freebore cut in the chamber for spitzers and heavy for cartridge bullets.
In 1992 Savage addressed the heavy bullet issue, based on their customer's request, with a special 1000 gun run of 110's called the 110WLE. It was a nonconcentric serialized mix of the 250 Savage, 300 Savage, a 7x57 Mauser. Use of the 110 action allowed more freebore to be cut in the chamber on all of these making the cartridge. The 300 Savage had an additional .040" of freebore in the chamber making it good with spitzers of 165 grains and up and spire points up to 200 grains.
Here is my 110WLE.
My 110WLE just went to a shop on consignment as I have not been shooting it, instead favoring the 722. I had hoped to find a 250 Savage & 7x57 Mauser but I never crossed paths with one.
Growing up as a deer lease kid in the '60s, I remember a number of men on the various South Texas leases hunting with bolt action 300 Savages. As I recall they were all scoped so they were probably 722s.
