300 Savage - 11/03/15 07:34 PM

Does anyone have any experience with this caliber? I am getting one passed down from a family member and was just curious about it. What caliber is it similar too? What game would be suitable for these rifle? Does it perform well in the field? Plan to take it out this season if it is in good shape.

What kind of gun? Is it a savage 99?

Very similar to a 308 Winchester.

Piece of junk, send me pics and I can maybe take it off your hands!
Because, that's what friends do. No, that is a very good deer/hog round.
30 cal. good ballistics, slower that the 308, less pressure, good round.
I have one in a Savage 99, does the job well.

Those 99s are pretty hard to find and a real neat gun. Worth a decent amount if they're in good shape though I don't think I'd ever be able to sell it.

I have a Rem81 in the caliber. A little less flat and a little less energy than the 308. Still rather effective.

Great for hogs and deer. Buddy of mine had a Remington pump in .300 Savage and killed quite a few deer with it. Like the other posted, kind of a .308 Lite.

I have a Model 99 in .300 Savage. Excellent general purpose deer/hog round, especially if you handload.

The down side is limited ammo selection off the shelf. Core lokt is all I ever see, which works just fine for me. Don't know what's available on-line.

Midway has Hornady, Remington and Doubletap available. Before I retired my 99 Hornady did not make a load and I don't think Doubletap existed.

I've got a 99 in 300 Savage. Had an old scope on it, but took it off. It feels right in the hand without a scope.

Funny it is compared so much to the .308. Anyone else get the irony here? Great round, killed deer for many years and still has a following. Good luck with it. Be safe and shoot straight!

I think a better comparison would be, that the 300 Savage is to the 308, what the 7x57 Mauser is to the 7mm-08.

except backwards. I believe with modern componets and rifles the 7x57 with a slightly larger case capacity will out perform the 7mm08 while the 308 will outperform the 300 savage.

I was thinking of in factory loadings, you can also rod rod the Savage to a degree in a bolt action, just not as much. Both cartridges are loaded below their potential due to older weaker rifles being available.

Re: 300 Savage - 11/04/15 05:20 PM

I'm a 300 Savage fan. I have owned a Sav 99 but it was traded for something a while back. My favorite is a '49 Rem 722.

With handloads and in a bolt action, the cartridge can be an equal to the 308 Win. The Sav 99 has some OAL limitation that might prevent the use of heavy bullets but that is the real rub of the 300 compared to the 308. Not enough freebore cut in the chamber for spitzers and heavy for cartridge bullets.

In 1992 Savage addressed the heavy bullet issue, based on their customer's request, with a special 1000 gun run of 110's called the 110WLE. It was a nonconcentric serialized mix of the 250 Savage, 300 Savage, a 7x57 Mauser. Use of the 110 action allowed more freebore to be cut in the chamber on all of these making the cartridge. The 300 Savage had an additional .040" of freebore in the chamber making it good with spitzers of 165 grains and up and spire points up to 200 grains.

Here is my 110WLE.

My 110WLE just went to a shop on consignment as I have not been shooting it, instead favoring the 722. I had hoped to find a 250 Savage & 7x57 Mauser but I never crossed paths with one.

Growing up as a deer lease kid in the '60s, I remember a number of men on the various South Texas leases hunting with bolt action 300 Savages. As I recall they were all scoped so they were probably 722s.

That's a sweet looking little rifle ranch dog

Re: 300 Savage - 11/04/15 05:35 PM

For a new 300 Sav shooter/reloader they often have a tough time finding brass. There are a couple of sources that seem to have it and my favorite is Titan Reloading. I'm not associated with them, just a customer, but I buy most of my 300 Sav & 35 Rem brass through them.

I just looked and they have some 300 Sav range brass but they usually have Hornady in stock. Several months ago I bought 400 Hornady cases from them and the prices very reasonable; cheap compared to other sources when in stock. I've also bought 35 Rem brass from them this year.

Thanks! The 722 is a really overlooked rifle. The 300 Sav is the only 30 caliber offering and there was not a larger bore. It is a true short action, shorter than today's short actions with an user adjustable trigger.

My stepbrother shot a Huge 14 point buck in Missouri years ago with one. One shot, old boy dropped in his tracks.

Re: 300 Savage - 11/05/15 10:28 PM

.300 Savage is still an excellent round. The Remington 721/722s were excellent guns in that caliber.

I load my .30-06 similar to .300 Savage ballistics and it is highly effective. IIRC, the military started with the .300 Savage when looking for a cartridge that morphed into the .308 Winchester. They wound up lengthening it and widening the extractor groove to work in machine guns.

Re: 300 Savage - 11/05/15 10:39 PM

The Savage 303 were alternatives to the 30-30. The 300 was improvement of power on the older 303 !
They could use the spire pointed ammo! I used a Savage 99 in 243 for years, Loved the brass rotary round counter in the lil window...one fine rifle they are. Another case of it would cost to much for retail MSRP if they still made them. Sad!

Re: 300 Savage - 11/06/15 09:33 PM

My old 99EG is very accurate and has killed a lot of deer and a turkey or two. 165 grain bullets can be safely loaded to 2600 fps and make for a great all round load. My son is a lefty and he is going to get this rifle as soon as he grows to the stock.

Between a 30-30 and .308.. basically everything you could ask for in a deer rifle.

I've got my great-grandpa's 1937 Savage 99. Its a tack driver. The recoil does have a bite to it. I guess its the combination of the metal buttplate and how light it is.

I'll never part with that rifle.
