New? Used?

You can get a used Marlin 30-30 for around $350.. I'd stay away from the new production Marlins unless you were able to inspect it carefully first.. I'm partial to the pre-Remington 1894 Marlins (think: pistol calibers).. They're roughly around your budget, depending on exact model & caliber.. Winchester, Henry & the others I have little/no experience with..

There are several calibers to choose from and manufactures. Is it for hunting, plinking or perhaps Cowboy Action Shooting?
Winchester, Marlin, Henry and Uberti are a few good ones. A little bit more detail may be helpful in offering you some sound advice.

Look around for a nice used Browning BLR, preferably in .308 caliber.

Good advice for an all around deer hunting lever gun.

Find a JM stamped Marlin 336 or Winchester 94 and you'll be good to go.

Yup, my thoughts exactly. In my opinion there is not better hunting lever action gun than a BLR.

I got to fire one in .243 Win, boy was that thing fun and accurate too.

Pre-64 Winchester 94 would make a fine gift.

I agree on the Winchester (30-30) or the BLR. Henry makes a good gun, but I feel like they are wall hangers because they are easy to ding up.

We have a brand new marlin. I see nothing wrong with it. its a pretty gun, no aesthetic flaws that I have found and it shoots great.

Another vote for Pre 64 Model 94

An idea that I like and have done before is a gun made the birth year of the person your buying for. Bought my father-in-law a 1963 Winchester 94 and he really liked that.

I picked up mine in like new condition for $550 on Gunbroker. It was an exceptional deal, but finding something nice under $700 is easy.

$700?

Marlin?

Please let me know if you find a .357 lever that's a real Marlin for less than $700.
