Long Range Shooting at 100 Yards

The gun club here only has ranges out to 100 yards... So how would I make a stab at long-range shooting?

I showed up with my .22LR pistol!

Next time, I'm going for even longer ranges, I'll show up with my pellet rifle.

Long range is a relative thing - depending upon what you are shooting.

You've still got to hold over, hold your mouth just so, and dope the wind. I was surprised at how well my Ruger MkIII hunter with a 2x scope did out to 100 yards.

Long range with a pellet gun is a ton of fun. Best I ever did with a springer, is hit a 2.5" spinner 10 out of 10 at about 75 yards. You really do have to hold your tongue just so...

Best I've done with my Nitro was 85 yards consistently hitting a coke can hanging off a branch.
Once you know where to hold it's easy to hit consistently....That is if the wind isn't blowing too hard!

Long range with a good pellet rifle is extremely fun and gratifying. Dirt cheap ammo, no recoil, and judging wind is something else. Peter Capstick wrote a chapter about practicing shooting with an air rifle.

Except for the recoil part... springers definitely recoil...

I used to shoot reduced target matches and they are very challenging! And I agree pellet rifles and rimfire at long range "75+ yds or so" is quite fun!

For target shooting at 100 yards, I have found that 2,000 fps does the job and is usually very accurate. I've tried 2k loads in .223 Remington and in 270 WSM, and in both cases I wound up with little bitty groups, on top of reduced noise, recoil and expense.

On the 270 WSM, after firing over 400 of these reduced velocity target loads, the bore scope showed no detectable wear or heat-cracking. Cases seemed to last forever, but actually the primer pockets started getting sloppy after ten or twelve reloadings. The 130 grain bullet going 2k was a rough equivalent to a 125 grain 30-30 load, or a 7.62x39. - One could probably use it for whitetail or pigs at 30-30 ranges and do quite well with it.

It has always seemed like a can of 500 pellets never lasted me very long. I would not be surprised to discover that I had launched over 100,000 of them.

My current pellet rifle is not too impressive though. I'll have to buy a new one if long range shooting is to be tried. - This one doesn't even handle short range very well, it's just not consistent.

My best pellet rifle was a Beeman R-1 in .177, selected for accuracy at the factory. With a Williams Guide peep sight and a ramp and bead taken from a Winchester model 70 Sporter, I found this rifle to be very capable at 50 yards and beyond. For some reason I wound up trading it off for a Walther P-38 that I thought I had to have.

Next time I'm going for an underlever, or side-lever pellet rifle. - Something from Germany or Austria, most likely. I have had very good luck with an underlever pistol, it was perhaps the most accurate gun of any kind that I have ever owned, but of course it was not very powerful, being a handgun.

I put so many rounds through my .177 Beamen, I wore it out. It was so accurate, it was amazing. I keep wanting to buy another nice air rifle.
