.308 or .300 blackout

I'm wanting to set up a hog rifle for subsonic's only. Do I go with a .308 and have something that can potentially hunt a variety of other animals or .300 blackout as a dedicated pig/whitetail gun? I've got a 6.5 Creed and 30/06, so I don't have to go with the .308.

I would go 300 blk out. I have 2 of the Rem bolt guns, and they are very handy at 16". It is much easier to get the subs to shoot well in a 300 blk out over the 308 Win because of the smaller case. In a bolt gun, it makes it very easy. If you go AR, then you have the semi auto available for the subs. I hunt with super sonic in all my 300 blk out rifles, but there are several expanding subsonic bullets now that I offer, as we all more you can purchase. It takes subsonic hunting to a new level.

+1 on the blackout....just built one for supersonic use 16" barrel 1/8 twist....there's a ton of ammo for the 300...be sure to use a pistol length gas system for yours so it will cycle subsonic loads

308.. so when you decide you want to hunt with it you have a viable caliber.

As a hog rifle only? .300, no doubt. Your other guns will kill deer just fine.

Technically, the 300 blk out would be a little quieter, all else being equal. The blk out holds about 20 grains of powder, and the 6.8 holds about 30 grains of powder. So, the less powder will have less gas release to keep it quieter.

I will later this week, probably Thursday or Friday. I worked up my loads for the 308 Win with the 200 grain expanding cold tracer just this weekend, and I'm good on those now. Now I need to do the 300 blk out, and I'll load those up this week to test Thur or Fri.

That's not a bad point, too. I love my 308's, no doubt.

But if it's specifically for subs, blk out is the better round with the 8" twist, for sure.

You have deer rifles. Go with the suppressed 300 blk.

+1 on the .300blk. If you can swing it, file the paperwork for SBR and get a 9" barrel and on a suppressor. Ultimate pig rig.

Already have the trust, if I traded for a "pistol" and wanted to convert it to a rifle what would I need to do?

Change the pistol extension tube to a carbine extension tube and put a collapsible stock on it. You might even get lucky and get a pistol with a carbine tube already installed. A lot of guys that build the pistols with intent to SBR it put a carbine tube on it and wrap it in paracord so it saves them a little money when the stamp finally comes in.

So would I need a Form 1 or Form 4 and does it need to go through a class 3 FFL?

It would be a Form 1 eFiled online.

Was it built from a stripped lower? Was it ever registered as a pistol? If it was registered as a pistol, then I don't think you can build it into a rifle. You might want to check on that.

It's easier to start with a stripped lower because you have to get it engraved. And if you have to ship it off for engraving, it's easier to do it stripped. So get the lower engraved first. Why engraved first? What if the engraving is messed up? What if the lower is lost during shipping? What if the lower is damaged during the process? Then you end up with a $200 stamp for a hunk of metal. So engrave it first; Trust name, city, state. Then eFile a Form 1 yourself. It's not terribly hard. Hardest part was figuring out that the scanned copy of the trust needs to be under a certain size to upload it, or in multiple pieces. Then you can start collecting parts for the SBR. Just don't have a pistol upper and a complete rifle lower in the same place. Build it as a pistol for now if you want. Then wait for the stamp before making it into a rifle.

I have a 16" 300 blk and an 8.2" 300 blk SBR. I almost never take the 16" out of the safe. I love the 8.2" one.
