I'm choosing between the light varmint and regular varmint profiles to put in an HS Precision stock with a varmint contour barrel channel. I'll be using the gun for hunting from a blind and for long range fun. Which contour do y'all like the best for an all-around gun?

The Light Varmint looks to be .700" O.D. @ 26" and 3.5 pounds
The Varmint looks to be .815" O.D. @ 26" and 4.5 pounds.
Heavy barrels are for repetitive shots. They take longer to heat up, and once they do they tend to not string shots as bad. But on a cold bore shot, both barrels will shoot equally as well. The hunting shot is the cold bore shot, so this depends on what you will be doing with the rifle more. Carrying it, making one CBS, maybe two shots on animals, or shooting repetitively on the range.
You could go with the best of both worlds and flute a Varmint contour. Then it would have the meat of a Heavy Varmint, but weigh the same +/- what a Light Varmint weighs.

It won't shoot "better" with a heavier berrel, but it will shoot well for more shots with a heavier barrel.
For instance, if I build an "extra large" 2000 yard rifle (between .338 Norma Mag and .374 Chey Tac now) it will probably have a 26"-30" barrel in a straight profile. The length to get velocity, and the extreme weight to maintain shootability for more shots before it gets too hot. The negative trade-off is that it will be a chunk to move. The positive trade-off is that, since it's so heavy it will help to combat recoil. There's always a give and take.

I have the Criterion light varmint contour @ 24 inches for my 6mm Creedmoor. Just starting initial load development, but very pleased so far.
