The Tikka is well known for accuracy out of the box. The Remingtons, IMHO, seem to be a crap-shoot on accuracy.

Tikka is guaranteed to put 3 rounds in an inch @ 100 yards and they do it.

Tikka comes with a better trigger as well.

It comes down to what fits your son and what he likes better. It's his choice. Think 'blonds, brunettes and redheads'.

I'd go with the Tikka T3 Lite Stainless.

I have had both, same caliber (7mm -08).

I still have the Tikka.

And if I needed another one, I'd buy another Tikka.

Either will shoot. Remington will come with a better factory stock (as long as you're not looking at the ADL), but the Tikka gets the nod on almost everything else.

#1 Tikka
#2 Remington, Savage

That order.

^^

look at youth models too if needed. I believe Tikka offers one

You didn't mention budget, be careful on the cheaper tier rifles. If you want a "cheap" one, go Ruger American

I bought a stainless tikka 7-08 for $450, swapped the factory rings for a set of Talley lightweights, and put it in a $229 B&C Medalist stock, and am very satisfied with the end result. In fact, I personally don't feel you could get a better rifle for the money especially once you replace the flimsy factory stock.

Thompson's are amazingly accurate out of the box too...just bought my first last year and very pleased with it.

not at all ive personally owned, shot, and loaded for about 10 differnt 708s not a single one would shoot factory ammo better than 2 inches and ranged from 2 to 5 inch groups, mine would only shoot 120 gr bullets and did under an inch but that was the only thing it would shoot, my buddies rem cdl got accurized at hill country rifles and still wont shoot factory ammo, i did get a load for it to work, a 140 gr at a mere 2690fps, same thing on his brothers weatherby sub moa, no factory ammo would work but i got a load to work at 2650 fps. he went through about 6 different 708s and finally gave up too. crunch the numbers on those weak loads and a 243 is better.
i yanked the 708 barrel off my vanguard screwed a 22-250 take off barrel i got off gun broker and bamm a .5 gun with factory ammo.
708s are good for nothing but a tomato stake

Re: 7MM 08 tikka or rem700 - 08/23/15 06:01 PM

Just from my experience, go with Tikka over Remington any day. I do own a couple of Remingtons that are very accurate but have owned others that had accuracy issues big time and have bought my last M700. Will still pickup a Remington 788 if I see one at a good price.

Have a couple Tikka rifles and have done nothing to them but shoot them and both are sub MOA shooters with factory loads they like. They are in calibers that I do not shoot often and have plenty of ammo for so I do not know if I will ever reload for them. 338 Federal and 270WSM

As for 7mm-08 have been shooting it since 1982, in a Remington 788 and it still shoots probably better than I can with groups under half MOA being common. Had a Browning Abolt that would do the same. The only 7mm-08 rifle I have ever owned or shot that I would not consider accurate is a Remington 700 that for reasons I am not sure about I still own

Time to turn that into a donor rifle then, Kevin.

Re: 7MM 08 tikka or rem700 - 08/24/15 01:20 AM

So from this thread, it sounds like:

<$350 - Ruger American
$350 < x > $550 - Remington 700 or Savage
>$550 - Tikka

I won't disagree with that logic.

Figure on adding substantial $$$ to have the 700 shoot in the same ball park and have a similar trigger break as the Tikka, and though a savage will likely shoot pretty well, figure in some 4 to 5 figure $$$$$ you will spend on orthopedic surgery correcting the carpal tunnel and rotator cuff tear that you will sustain from working the clunky bolt throw on a savage action... Food for thought...digest.

Tikka. Not sure I will buy a different rifle going forward. Have a rem 700 and a savage as well. The action on my savage is a little smoother than the 700.

of those two... that you want to just buy and shoot... the Tikka

if your making it a donor... then its way more open...

Re: 7MM 08 tikka or rem700 - 09/17/15 02:51 PM

Of the two, Tikka - hands down.

Having said that, I bought my wife a Ruger American in 7-08 and it flat out shoots! Under 1" at 100 and a hair under 1" at 150. If your budget is a little bigger get the Tikka, if you want to save a bit on the rifle, the Ruger American is a good deal.

I'd go 700, (in MTN SS), but I'm fairly biased.
