Hand Lapping Rifle Barrels - What Tools are Needed?

Hand Lapping Rifle Barrels - What Tools are Needed? - 08/11/15 12:08 AM

I am tinkering with an AR-15 trying to squeeze all the accuracy I can get and hand lapping the barrel is the one thing I can't seem to find much information. What specific tools and techniques are needed? I realize buying the best barrel is the way to go but this is more of a hobby quest.

Have you bore-scoped the barrel?

I have not bore-scoped either barrel (1 new and 1 used). What does that tell me?

BTW, I have no access to a bore-scope.

Just wondering if there was some reason you felt there were issues in the barrel that needed addressing by lapping. Bore scope may reveal a perfect finshed smooth barrel... or not.

Somehow I knew you would take this position JG loser8

This is just an experiment. I see many rifle builders mention hand lapping and just wanted to try it.

Thanks for the Shooting Times article, I will check it out.
