Ok, Suggestions? - 07/30/15 03:05 AM
I have an old FN Mauser ('98 CRF) JC Higgins rifle in .270 Win. that I've had for a LONG time. I don't shoot it anymore as I have other .270's. I was keeping it around for trade fodder and now I'm debating on maybe using it as a donor action for another caliber. It's a great shooter in excellent condition, I just have too many in this caliber. Here she is...
Any suggestions?
I'd hate to trash the rifle. Its a classic. Maybe get it rebored for a bigger caliber? I don't know what other calibers you have. Maybe .280 Rem or .280 AI or, I'm sure you reload, .35 Whelen. Something different.

I know, it's a pretty one and a good shooter too.
Looking in the manuals now. Maybe something interesting like 8mm-'06?
All I have are so-called "standard" calibers....7mm-08, .270, 30-06, got a few 8x57 JS too. Nothing wrong with any of them, just thinking about something "different".

Looks like you need a good varmint caliber! 22-250 if strictly varmint, .243 or 6mm for more overall use. I shoot a .243 with 87 grain Berger VLD's and it's a dream to shoot, Save the original bbl.

.243-06 with a 26-30" barrel...

I guess I'd re-barrel it without hesitation if it didn't have any sentimental value to you.

It really doesn't. I could probably sell it and buy something more interesting (which I may do), or just do it this way. I dunno yet.

If you sell let me know, I could use a good .270
