Is there really a 12 gauge 2-3/4" magnum or is it just a marketing gimmick?

I've always thought magnum loads began at 3 inches.

Closeout sale at Academy included a lot of 12 gauge "2-3/4 inch magnum" bird shot in a few sizes. I'd like to get a few boxes but, for the moment, I'm scared off because of the magnum labeling.

magnum would mean bigger right? maybe their 2 3/4 is measured in American inches instead of European inches

When you see that it normally means it a little hotter shell. Back in the old days that would've been a high brass shell...not so much anymore. High/low brass doesn't mean what it once did.

Compare the powder load on the boxes between the mag/non-mag. As Judd said, the 'magnum' or short magnum load will be hotter. It will have more powder such as 3 3/4 DR EQ vs 3 DR EQ, or will say 'MAX' or will have a significant difference in MV, depending on what spec they put on the box versus their non-magnum loads. In the old days the bigger the powder load, the taller the brass because the brass had to be as high/higher than the powder load.

12 Ga 2 3/4 in Magnum loads are usually 1 3/8 oz or 1 1/2 oz loads compared to the standard 1 1/4 oz. They also tend to be 3 3/4 dram equivalent or max loads.

'mike..'splain Drams to the crowd ...and their relationship to shot load oz's...and MV differences tween High V & Magnum's ...

This could be a really timely topic...IMO ....as shotgun ammo info is tooo simple these days. these guys born after 1990 need to unnerstand the quantum physics involved in selecting the correct ammo for the job
