how much is to much lapping!?

how much is to much lapping!? - 07/22/15 01:31 AM

I mounted my leupold on my 300 with a Picatinny Rail and burris rings and had to lap the crap out of it because the the rear was a little higher then the front. Well after I finished lapping the rear ring had zero black left so the ring was smooth as all get out.. now after talking to a couple people they are saying that the scope is prone to move.. also I didn't lap it so much that that the edges of the rings touched where the screws are.. there is still a gap between the top and bottom even after being screwed down if that makes sense.. so yall think I lapped to much or am I just being paranoid? I was gonna take it to a gunsmith but every time I've seem people do this they don't check to see of the rings are even and the cross hairs are always tilted..

By the time you pay a gunsmith you could have some Seekins rings

If you still have a gap on each side after you tighten the rings on the scope, you should be OK.

Maybe you can educate me, but I've never understood this opinion. If your mounts are so far misaligned that you need to lap them, then why would better quality rings fix that? I don't believe the misalignment that lapping is intended to fix is in the rings themselves.

I didn't lap the Burris rings on my new Savage I bought awhile back and they're working fine.

I've mounted several lately ad each was almost perfectly aligned before I lapped them. I would be concerned if they were that far off initially. However, if you torqued them and there is space then I agree that you are okay. Start shooting!

Burris Signature Zee rings fix the whole lapping problem...they aren't the prettiest or coolest looking rings but they flat work awesome and you don't have to lap them.

If you are worried about slipping, put two sided Scotch tape inside of the rings. It acts like a gasket and also provides a sticky surface.

Yep. As long as there's a gap, you've got pressure on the scope. Just make them line up alike with the amount of space on each side. Sounds like you're fine. Range report!

You had your rings on backwards.

Thanks guys!!! I'm almost all set up now.. now I'm working on a barrel cooler. This waiting 20 minutes between shots is for the birds lol

A cooler full of ice water and a bath towel soaking inside. Wrap the towel around the barrel to cool it down, place it back in the cooler once the barrel has come back down to ambient temperature.

The barrel would have to be hotter than you can get it by shooting for it to hurt it. I havn't seen the towel method hurt a barrel yet. Thin barrels heat quickly and cool quickly. Same as thick barrel heat slowly and cool slowly.

One of the best machine guns the world has seen was water cooled. The downside to it was that the squad had to carry water for the reservior or urinate in it once they got to where they were going.

Never seen rings specify "this side toward enemy".

On my left hand rifles the windage nut is on the right side. On my right hand rifles they are on the left. Never have had the rings keep the scope from zeroing and never have lapped any rings either.

The Zee rings are really great. I once had a Ruger American that shot 18" low and left at 50 yards. I tried different rings with the same result. Then I got the Burris Signature Zee rings with the offset inserts and was able to get it on target with the scope adjustments centered.

It worked well, and was a lot quicker than sending the rifle back to the factory.

There... I fixed it!

Not that kind of backwards, front-to-back rings backwards. We still have no idea what rifle this is. Some have front rings higher than rears. With that much lapping to square them up, I'm guessing he has the front and rear rings in the wrong places.

edited to add: Good way to screw up a scope, too. It torques the tube.

Why would front rings ever be higher than rear?

I usually put a thin strip of paper inside each ring-half. - Gives it a good grip. Printer or notebook paper will do.

Be very good to do inside Burris Zee rings. I've seen a scope work forward due to recoil in those rings.

Just the way some rifles are built. The mounting surface on the front's just not on the same plane as the rear mounting surface, usually lower, so a higher front ring (just by a couple mm's) is required to get the scope level with the receiver. Front/rear rings are not always interchangeable.

Tried these per Judd's recommendation for my savage that was also off a similar amount. They worked great. Been shooting it for 2 years and still spot on.

^^^ This! Not to mention you won't have ring marks when you remove the scope.

its a fix to a non existent problem, who thinks up these stupid gimmicks. actually ive seen it cause problems. my friend bought into the hype, had a gun get the accurizing treatment at a reputable shop and lapping the rings is one thing they did. in my 40 years around firearms its the first scope ive seen move on its own, and the first lapped rings ive been around.
