Winchester Model 74 22LR, rust removal - 07/13/15 11:07 PM

Hey folks I've got a question, I found an old Winchester model 74 22LR at a garage sale this weekend and the action is very dirty but seems to be fine. The old gun has a lot of rust as the photos will show, (I hope). I'm thinking of trying to clean it up and keep it for a grandkids gun but what is the best thing for removing rust without taking off too much metal? Sorry for the dumb questions but I've never let a gun of mine get rusty so this is a first for me. The wood I know how to restore. Thanks in advance.

0000 steel wool and oil, is a time honored recipe, give the oil a bit of time to penetrate.

0000 steel wool and oil work great. The wool is softer than the metal so it won't scratch, but harder than the oil soaked rust so it will scrub it off.
