.280 Rem or 7mm-08, Wichester 70 Super Grade - 07/11/15 05:53 PM

Looking at a Winchester Super Grade in these calibers. The 7mm08 is a 9 1/2 twist, I can't find what twist the .280 is. I'm a shooter not a collector so which one if it was your $$

Almost seems wrong to buy a Super Grade in a Remington cartridge instead of Winchester.

I'd take the 280.

What are you hunting with it?

Re: .280 Rem or 7mm-08, Wichester 70 Super Grade - 07/11/15 07:42 PM

duel

Six of one ...and half a dozen of the other...

Hunting with either one in Texas is a push decision...No real delineation on performance enough to sweat over it.

But...Just for Chits & Giggles... 'cause its a Kool Thang these days... I'd prolly take the 280....IMO it comes down which one has the prettiest wood.

Hunt the Rockies & across the Pond...I'd take the 280, so there you have it....OR ... you could pull the barrel and rechamber it to 28 Nosler and be the ONLY kid on the block to have one for sure.
JMHO & YMMV

I'd prefer the 7mm-08, but would take either one.

Good choice on the rifle. up

I'd take the .280 without reservation.

Pffft, 7mm 168 gr running medium speed, or a 7mm 168 gr with some real oomph?

.280.

Next question?

Isn't that kind of like a comparison between a .308 Win. and .30-06 Springfield?

Well, we'll see, the .280 is supposed to be a run of 500 guns. Could warrant a higher cost, but I'm not collecting. So I guess I'm really shopping wood. I've found a pretty 7mm-08 and a beautiful 7mm mag.

I saw a 300H&H Model 70 yesterday in a 1988 push feed ...that'll always have more cachet or Kool than a '06 or 300Winny & Wby...and almost pulled the credit card when I knew I shouldn't ...just 'cause it was a 300H&H...and I don't ever get sweaty palms over anything in a 30 caliber... thank you Jesus it wasn't a Pre '64 or I'd have some serious 'splainin to do at home...Just Sayin'

The .280 is a run of 500 guns for the MidwayUSA Foundation, the 7mm-08 Super Grade (along with .243 and .308 versions) are non-catalog/limited distribution SHOT Show Special runs - there might actually be fewer 7mm-08s around than the .280s. The 7mm-08 has a 22" barrel and the .280 a 24", both are "Sporter" contour so both are heavy before you even mount a scope and load 'em up.

If you got your mind set on wanting a new Super Grade, I'd pick whichever caliber and barrel length floats your boat along with the best looking wood without worrying about it being collectable, especially since these recent Model 70s/Super Grades are now being made and stamped "imported from Portugal". Collectors are not at all excited about the Portugal stuff other than it's driving up the value of the pre-Portugal/BACO earlier Super Grades (New Haven guns). They are mainly after one thing......, pre '64 M70 versions. But, who knows....., maybe collectors will be after these new versions 50 years from now!

Cabela's has/had one in .257 Roberts. Really wanted to buy it but I can have a nice complete rig for that kind of money.

Re: .280 Rem or 7mm-08, Wichester 70 Super Grade - 07/15/15 05:46 PM

The absolute only reason that I'd go with the 7mm-08 is that I already have a 280 that the late Mickey Coleman built for me. I wouldn't take for that rifle, it's been my go to rifle ever since I got it. I'm having a 26 Nosler built now but I seriously doubt that it will replace my 280.

You know the guy who started the thread at the link below just won one in .280 and was trying to decide what to do with it. Maybe make him an offer?

I won a M70 Supergrade in .280 -- what to do?

I missed out on a beautiful 7mm-08 in Ft Worth, I've moved on to something else now.

The minimal extra range you get from a 280 isn't worth the substantial increase in beating you get in recoil.....time after time after time.

I'm a reloader and I reload all ammo I shoot, I have a good place to target shoot and that's what I like to do for recreation on weekends. I don't just sight my gun in and shoot ten times during hunting season then put it up.

7mm-08 all day long.

I like the 7-08 but you could get crazy with the 280 and ream it out to a 280 AI.

Re: .280 Rem or 7mm-08, Wichester 70 Super Grade - 07/24/15 03:52 AM

I have a 708 and a 280AI. Both will hammer texas critters with no discernible difference on game. I got the 280AI (Bullberry Encore) for hiking in the mountains chasing elk because I didn't want to carry the heavy 708 (700VLS) around, and it handles heavier bullets a bit better than the 708, aside from being shorter and lighter than an equal length barreled bolt gun. Both are fine calibers, my 708 gets fed 140gr GK's, and the 280AI gets 160gr AB's.

How much did that rifle weigh? Even a 7mm Rem. Mag. is pretty mild recoiling in a 7 1/4 - 7 1/2 pound rifle.

I have owned at least 15 280's. The only one that recoil was even near noticeable is the Ruger 77. It's all about stock design. The Remington 700's, especially, are quite docile. I have owned every 7mm chambering except the 7x57 & STW. The 280 & 7 Wby are stellar performers.

I just own one .280. The Ruger "canoe paddle" with a stainless barrel. Ugly with a capital "U". I take it everywhere, don't worry about nicking it, and have killed several things with it. Never noticed the recoil.

Re: .280 Rem or 7mm-08, Wichester 70 Super Grade - 07/24/15 07:43 PM

Ive only shot one 280. Dad has a mountain rifle. It doesn't bother me to shoot it, but it doesn't bother me to shoot my 300 wby either. I sighted in my 870 with slugs and shot about 3 boxes of them then 1/2 a box through a marlin carbine 45/70 throwing 300-400 grain chunks of lead. The 280 with a stiff loaded 150 grain has a kick, not horrible or punishing, but don't be mislead that its like shooting a 243.
