Christensen or Forbes Rifle

Anyone have experience with either rifle or better yet anyone have experience with both brands? I am considering one or the other and don't have any knowledge about either. I know the Forbes is now a production gun so it may not stand up to the Christensen in the accuracy department but do I really need 1/4 moa for deer hunting or any kind of hunting? Give me your inputs. Thanks

What are you looking for in a rifle?

Totally different type of rifle, but I recently bought a Christensen AR10 in 308 with their 18" carbon wrapped barrel and it is very accurate and is, by far, the lightest AR10 I own. I took it out to 800 yards on the first range session. Very impressed with it.

What are you looking for exactly?

I would start with a list of three columns, What you need the rifle to do, what you want the rifle to do, and other considerations. The need column is non negotiable, there's some leeway with what you want it to do, and the other considerations are to tailor it to your tastes. After you do the exercise then you can ask questions about suitability.

Weight requirements? Size constraints? Distance requirements? Choice of caliber? share a little bit about what you're using it for. There's lots of guns that'll get you where you need to be without buying one from the big name guys, right here in our home state!

I am looking for a bolt gun probably in 30-06 or maybe a 300wm. Doesn't have to be the lightest, I don't plan on doing any sheep hunting, too old.

You could do alot better than those two if weight isn't a concern. You could have a very nice rifle built for the cost of a Christensen

If possible I'd probably do a custom/semi-custom if the money is close

I have a buddy that owns a Carbon Classic and he paid about $3k. It shoots well but not spectacular. For $3k, you can have a very nice rifle built.

Looking at the Christensen I'd be more inclined to buy a Cooper. The synthetic stocked Coopers are $500 to $600 dollars less.

My thought exactly. Have a Cooper and wish I had more. Accurate well made guns, their half moa accuracy guarantee has been no problem to confirm, lots of calibers to choose from as well.

Have shot Christensen arms rifles and actually like the Cooper better. Never shot a Forbes rifle though

He just finished a 300 win mag for me. If you get a good flute on the barrel it is not too bad weight wise. I am looking forward to taking it out in the next few weeks.

I had a christensen 25-06 at one point. I had wanted that rifle for such a long time, finally worked enough at the ranch and cutting my folks lawn my dad went out and got it for me. It was a head turner, but an utter dissapointmemt. For a gun that was $2800 without glass it shot at best after months of handloading different powders, bullets, and lengths it never shot sub-moa, best group was right at 1.1x. I cant tell you how much that pissed me off. I almost bought a melvin forbes production grade rifle. Melvin is known to build a hell of a rifle and his production rifles are no slouch. After shooting one in 243 i was sold. Being that i like customs i saved up a lil more and got built something identical. UL ss bbl, 700 action trued and skeletonized, banser stock (High Tech), warne rings for $1700. I would not hesistate to buy a forbes. Forbes actually has a production line and full custom (2x price), both easy sub moa.

Have you considered a nosler patriot same price point and they are at the tops of my list other than another custom.

The only big reason I see to buy a Christensen is if you want the weight savings. That only matters really if you're going to shoot in volume. Otherwise there are other ways to save the weight like a featherweight barrel etc. That said, my brother has a Christensen barreled Browning A-bolt, and it shoots VERY well. I've worked up a couple of loads for him over the last few years and both shot extremely well. I've been very pleased with it in the accuracy department. Enough for me to want to have one of their barrels as a toy. Fortunately cooler heads prevail and I've been buying huge Bartlein barrels instead.
