Min-dehumidifiers?

I have a Liberty gun safe. For several years now I've tried one of those mini-dehumidifiers that you plug in the wall to dry out. Blue for dry, pink for saturated. Darn thing turns pink in a couple of days inside the cabinet. It's always been that way, not just since the "month of rain". San Antonio area is more humid than Dallas. The rifles and pistols always look and function just fine.

Do I even need to hassle with this? My dad kept rifles in the corner of a closet, or in a plain cabinet in the living room and there wasn't a spot of rust on any of them.

On the plus side recently - the humidity in my cigar humidor is perfect.

I use the golden rod and have had it for 10 years or more and never have had a problem. Every once in a while I will touch it to make sure it is still warm and my safe is out in my garage. All guns have been wiped down with oil and are not in a case.

I've never used anything and never had a problem. I think it's one of those products that is useful for a few folks that live in really humid environments or if you stick your safe outside in a non-climate-controlled environment, but they've convinced a ton of folks to buy them who don't really need them.

But OkieDokie for instance has his safe in his garage - he should absolutely put a dehumidifier in there. But if your safe is indoors and you don't live in south Louisiana, I wouldn't worry about it.

Use a Golden Rod. Put the desiccant in there and it won't turn. I have both in my safe, maybe the Golden Rod dries the desiccant?

I use desiccant alone, never had a problem and I live in S LA where 90% humidity is very common.

The Golden Rod is just there to create heat and circulation in the safe. With circulation, vapor can't condense on anything in the safe so no rust. It won't remove moisture.

I too use one of those plugin units and it doesn't take long at all to turn pink on the indicator which usually means i'll plug it in somewhere and then forget about it and add it back to the safe a week later.

before I got this I noticed some slight slight rust on a mosin, not bad just very slight....i should get a golden rod but my safe didn't have predrilled holes or outlets for one.

go to your nearest dollar tree store, and look for the desiccants
they sell. they're roughly quart-sized and do a really good job
in deep east Texas humidity and mosquito city.
and. . . .they're only a dollar

I live in houston where humidity is generally high in the summers. I've had some minor rust problems before with guns that most sat in my safe. I haven't tried and of the electronic ones but I use one of those large silica packets. In fact, I bought one online somewhere and then I have 2 giant ones (probably about half pound per bag) that I got with some furniture I bought. Haven't had any problems since.
