Project: Aiming to get an AR-15 7.62x39mm to shoot surplus ammo at 1 MOA - 06/02/15 04:03 AM

Call me crazy but with 7.62x39 ammo running at just about .22 cents a pop I'd like to try and build up a gun that will run it efficiently enough to serve as an all-purpose plinker and hunting gun.

I got a MAS Defense built upper with a 16 inch carbine 1x10 barrel and with the savings on this sparsely equipped model I ended up splurging on the bolt, which is a Leigh Defense NiB. I slapped it in an AIM Surplus NiB carrier and rounded this out with a DPMS lower that is marked 7.62x39.

I could have done the project without the lower but what the heck since this is my first stab at a AK ammo AR I figured to keep it separate from the "multi" caliber flock.

I also bought a Red-X arms enhanced firing pin.

The ammo, Wolf 122gr FMJ steel cased, arrives tomorrow - I figure to do a function test first with 100 rounds and then get started with the project part.

I'm thinking about using a Lead Sled and firing up the old chronograph to assess the ammo and guns native accuracy at 100 / 200 / 250 yards.

I expect 2 - 3 MOA at BEST, how are you guys getting better accuracy from there?

Where there is a will there is a way and I only find accurate ARs interesting.......

I get great accuracy from my AR's by simply running good ammo that the gun likes. Yours may run the Wolf stuff fine and shoot great but if it doesn't that does not mean it's not capable of 1 MOA accuracy.

Oh and I load .223 rounds with Hornady SP bullets for .1680 cents per round and they shoot good. rifle

I contemplated a 5.56 for the project but passed based on bullet weight and an itch to try the 7.62x39 again.

A couple years back I bought a Century VZ-2008 and I tried everything to get it to shoot surplus and handloads accurately . It was an outright failure.

I love me some 30 cal bullets in an AR15 platform (currently run 300 BO / 30 Remington AR / American 30) but for these calibers there isn't a surplus ammo option.

I was reading last night about a Teludyne Straight Jacket treatment for barrels , seems pricey but if effective that may be an option to shoot 30 cal on the cheap.

Long run cost vs short run costs will be a critical fundamental in my project -

A buddy and I tried the same thing, best we could get with surplus ammo and domestic ammo was 3 MOA. There's no russian "match" ammo and all the domestic ammo are .308 bullets being passed off as 7.62x39 (wrong size bullets).

Don't get me wrong I love me some bullet holes of the 7.62 flavor but when i need accuracy too i go with the .300BLK. the 7.62x39 is still a blast to shoot and cheap, but its no sniper.

I'd say slug your barrel and figure out what size it is, and load some with a decent, properly sized bullet.

My prediction is you will have to hand load to get the accuracy you desire.
