Grendelized CZ 527 - 05/18/15 01:48 PM
Picked up my CZ 527 that started as a 7.62X39 carbine and now wears a straight fluted 22 inch Obermeyer 1:8.4 barrel, chambered with SAAMI spec reamer. Action blue printed and squared with the barrel. Factory stock was used but is now glass and pillar bedded with the barrel channel opened up to get rid of the cutouts for the rear sight, the barrel is profiled to fit the new channel contour and free floated the entire length. Scope mount is a DIP products 20moa rail, with it standard low rings will work so will pick those up tomorrow and finish mounting the scope. Hopefully will get to shoot it Tuesday

I like the stainless and wood look. What's the weight?

Re: Grendelized CZ 527 - 05/18/15 02:56 PM
7.4 lbs with scope, mounts and mag. Was going for a light weight hunting rifle that can serve for targets with low recoil.

Looks like it met your goal rather well. I'll be watching for the range report.

Trigger is factory, they come with a single set trigger, this one breaks at 3lbs when not set and 10 ounces when set

That is a very good looking rifle, I have a Rem 700 BDL in .243 that would be a great subject to do this to. That is if you don't mind me using your ideas.

Re: Grendelized CZ 527 - 05/19/15 02:19 AM
Since it's a 243, make it a 6.5 x 47 Lapua.
Tad more oomph than the Grendel. Another great 6.5 mm chambering with low recoil.

Might have to do just that. You have a good place to do a ladder test at distance when I have some fireformed brass to work with.

Don't mind at all. The 6.5X47 Lapua Fireman suggested would be a very good canidate since it would be a little less costly than the Grendel in a 700. The Lapua uses the same bolt face as the 243 while the Grendel uses a little smaller bolt face. Then Again Pacific Tool and Guage sells Remington 700 bolts with the correct bolt face and a host of other cartridges with the 220 Russian as the parent case. Trajectory of the Grendel is almost the same as a 308 with 168gr match bullets with recoil less than a 30-30

Oh Scott is setup now with the tools and jigs he made for this build and CZ is now selling just the action if you want one. They will also sell the stock or a varmint stock that is more pistol grip style if that is your preference

It amazed me how well it balanced and pointed. I can only imagine how well it will shoot.

Graf & Sons carries the 6.5 Grendel brass from several different manufactures.

That is really nice. I think I remember you talking about doing
this a few years ago? Let us see some chrono and grouping results
once you get it dialed in!!
Neat.
I remember you mentioning this a while back. Good looking rifle!
I love my 527 in 7.62x39...May have to pick up another one and do a similar build!!!

Re: Grendelized CZ 527 - 05/20/15 11:28 PM
Well, shot it today with some Hornady 123gr SST factory ammo so now have some fireformed cases for my chamber. 2 5 shot groups about 3/4 inch not great but not bad for the gusting crosswind and factory ammo.

Holler at me when you want to come ladder test it. Bring prepped brass, powder, and the seater die and you can load groups after the ladder test, right on the range. Oe trip out there and you'll know your load. Course you'll have to come back again and ping steel with it to 800

What powder due you plan to use? My Grendel loved some Imr xbr8208. 123 scenars or amax over 28.3 was magic.

Re: Grendelized CZ 527 - 05/21/15 08:03 PM
I wonder if CZ would offer the caliber or at least make a special run for a large buyer? I know Ruger has done special runs for large wholesalers at times.

Re: Grendelized CZ 527 - 05/21/15 08:21 PM
So far CZ hasn't made any and as far as I know rebarreling a bolt action or a TC encore is the way to go. Howa quite possibly will be the first, heard not long ago their testing is looking good and late this year or early next for availibility.

Re: Grendelized CZ 527 - 05/21/15 08:23 PM
Powder plans are 8208 and CFE223
I got to fondle this gun today and all I can say is pictures don't do it right. It is a compact little hunting machine. The handy length of this rifle can't be beat. I hope to shoot it someday. I have a 6 year old that will be needing his first rifle if a couple years and something like this might fit the ticket.

How is cheek weld and bolt clearance?
Posted By: kmon11
Re: Grendelized CZ 527 - 05/30/15 05:03 PM
Bolt clearance is good using a DIP industries rail and Low Rings, could use the extra low rings with a slight modification to the rail and still have clearance. This one has the new style bolt so there is more bolt clearance than the older 527s. Cheek weld is not great but is good with the addition of a cheek piece.

Re: Grendelized CZ 527 - 05/30/15 10:27 PM
I've been wanting to build one as well, for a while. Just bought donor rifle today.
I'm gonna shoot it as-is for a bit, maybe blue print the action, see how well it shoots before re-barrel.
Any idea if the Mannlicher stock CZ puts on their 223 will fit this action?

Re: Grendelized CZ 527 - 05/31/15 01:09 AM
The FL stock will need a little work if using it in a 7.62X39 or Grendel since the bottom metal is different for the different size mags required. Different bottom metal and mags used for 22Hornet/17Fireball/221Fireball then 222/223/17Rems and 7.62X39. CZ has announced the complete 527 actions will be offered for sale instead of just the complete rifles.
For the other post about scope clearance and the bolt here is the new style bolt handle. It is a piece of cake to change out.
bolt handle A different route for bolt handle is James Calhoon of the 19 caliber fame. For a price send them your bolt handle and they will send one modified for better scope clearance
(Calhoon).
There is also a company doing tactical bolts with replaceable screw on knobs and are ground different for better clearance.
LinkThe ability to have the bolt more out of the way allows the scope to be mounted lower which helps with getting a better cheek weld. If the DIPinc rail I used wasn't the 25MOA version My scope would be even lower. Think will be changing that to a flat rail and doubt I will need the cheek pad then.
Without a doubt if/when I do another build with a CZ 527 Scott will be getting the work, great guy to work with and excellent craftsman

What velocity range are you thinking you will make with it?
Posted By: kmon11
Re: Grendelized CZ 527 - 06/01/15 02:28 AM
Figuring somewhere around the following:
2800+ with 100 gr partitions, some data gets it to 3000
2700+ with 123 A-Max and SST
2600 is about Max 130gr Berger Hybrid VLD
Those figures are based on a few sources including published data and from other Grendel boltaction owners. I am not going to push it hard mostly looking for accuracy but will ring some steel and punch paper out there a ways.
Will take the Chronograph on the next range visit and get a lot better actual idea after that.
Got a New Vortex Viper PST in for it Thursday and shot it Thursday afternoon. Could not keep shots on the paper, that thing was moving around. It will be going back to Vortex this week. In the mean time pulled the Bushy 6500 off the 50BMG and mounted it on the rifle will be using it for a while I guess. Won't hurt to have a little more magnification for working on groups and load development anyway.

Re: Grendelized CZ 527 - 06/09/15 03:24 AM
Made it to the range today, chronograph battery died so no measurements today but will get those later. Going to have to stretch it out to figure out a load for the 130gr Berger hybrids since all loads I tried today shot pretty good @ 100 yards. CFE 223 powder, COAL 2.285 which feeds smooth through the magazine. All groups were 3 shots except bottom right that was 7 with one OOPs called shot to the left after reloading the mag shot 5 went off and was my fault and I knew it.
Do not use the data for this load in an AR Grendel, some would be a little hot I imagine. In the bolt action I did not have any sticky bolt lift though even though the range temp was 96 degrees.
I think Scott did a heck of a job on this little handy rifle, I wanted a light weight hunting rifle that would shoot good, think this will do.
I did put a different scope on it, bought a FFP Vortex Viper for it but that one would not stay on paper so pulled the Bushy 2.5-16 from the 50BMG and used it today.
The 3 shots above the white bull were from a guy at the range that wanted to try it.
