260 Rem range report

260 Rem range report - 05/16/15 06:02 PM

I travelled up to the camp to hunt turkey (no turkeys harmed today) this morning and to site in a new Rem 260 that I picked up over the winter. Rifle is a Sako 85 Hunter with laminated stock and topped with a Swaro 3-10x by 42mm scope.

Rifle was brand new and unfired. First shot at 30 yards was 2.5 inches left and 2 inches high from where I wanted it. Made an initial adjustment on the scope and fired 6 more rounds at 30 yards. Shooting was done from a standing position off of shooting sticks. Made a minor adjustment based on the 6 shot group and moved out to 100 yards.

Fired one 3 shot group at 100 yards off of the sticks. I site all my rifles off of sticks as this is a more realistic hunting scenario (for me) than a bench/bags and as I don't target shoot much (except with the 22LR) I don't see any point in using a bench/bags unless I am trying to troubleshot (pardon the pun) a problem.

Results of the 3 shot 100 yard group (8th, 9th, and 10th round ever fired from this rifle):

Grouping was just over 0.5 inch. Pretty sure this one is a keeper. I packed it up at that point as I didn't see any need to waste any more ammo. Ammo was Nosler Trophy Grade shooting 125 grain partitions. I have a 100 rounds (now 90) of these cartridges and the plan is to hunt with them and than use the brass to reload in the future.

Nice rife and a dang good cartridge.

The purpose of zeroing from a bench or prone is to eliminate errors. The errors being human. If you are rock solid while zeroing and the rifle, ammo, or scope is causing poor results you can narrow it down and fix the problem. Zeroing from field positions creates more error. So when most folks (not you obviously) are shaking a bit and the rifle or ammo is not grouping well they have no idea of it is equipment or shooter error.

Once you get rock solid, and get a good zero by all means practice field positions.

Awww it's too bad you missed the target entirely with one of them 'spensive Left Coast bullets...

It might can be made to make do if'n you'd ship it to Texas and lemme play with it a while though.

Nice rifle. Nice group.

I am with firemanjg on sighting the gun from the prone position or a solid bench. I take most of my shots from shooting sticks at distances between 200 and 300 yards so I can't afford the error you might have from your method that will never show up because of the much shorter distance you take shots.

I suppose if I was shooting 200+ yards on a regular basis my bias would change. In 30+ years of hunting the big woods the longest shot I have ever had was 125 yards. The only shot I have ever taken that was further was on my trip this past March to the Hill Country where I took a Blackbuck at 180 yards.
