New Horizon 300 Win Mag

Posted By: DStroud

New Horizon 300 Win Mag - 03/17/15 02:55 AM

Second trip to the range with the Model 70 upgraded by Derrick at Horizon with a new trigger/barrel/ bedded and braked with a nice Custom finish in Titanium.
First trip grouped great and velocity was impressive but only had enough after chrono to shoot one group but it was sub 1/2 MOA
Late today went back to verify speed and see if the first group was a fluke.
It was not. 3 Shots

Here is the gun.

Nice rifle. A buds 300wm had freakishly fast speeds for the first 100 rounds ( pushing 230 berger hybrids @ 3000fps ) it settled in around 2950 fps after 100 or so.

Just more proof the quality of the barrel and a smith that knows what he's doing is the most important part of the barreled action.

Well done, Derrick and DStroud!

I will take my old Win m70 over a rem 700 any day!
Rem actions have a huge aftermarket support for a reason. It takes all of it to make them shoot. Lol

Very nice rifle!

So is this a Ford vs. Chevy thing, or is there a genuine reason not to build on a Win 70 CRF action?

Personally you are just introducing another variable with the extractor cut that needs to be done right to get it to shoot right. The other thing is its annoying to have a CRF if you are just throwing rounds in the chamber vs loading them from the mag.
