Duracoat and Serial Numbers

Do you do anything special to protect the stamping (serial number, model etc.) when applying Duracoat? My son wants to learn so I picked out an old 1100 shotgun and stripped it down, the serial number stamping is getting really thin. My thought is to apply one or two coats and then tape it off if we need to apply more.

I've never seen Duracoat or Cerakote sprayed thick enough to cover SN's. However, I don't think I've seen either on a real old gun with barrel wore like that either.

Sounds like you have a good plan, just keep an eye on it. One thing I wouldn't like about taping is you will then have a defined edge where the tape was. That is just something to think about.

Good luck.

I wouldn't worry about it, the s/n is still there. Document it and spray.

If you're doing multiple coats, I'd spray one coat and then tape. You wouldn't have as "defined" of an edge as you would if you taped before spraying at all, but you'd still have the serial number legible.

disclaimer: I've never used duracoat, but this seems like a reasonable solution.
