7mm-08 or 260 Rem?

I'm building a gun for a friend who lives in Washington, but hunts down here with me in Texas. He has a Weatherby MarkV 300 Win Mag. He mainly hunts Eastern Washington for Mule Deer and down here at my place which is whitetail and exotics. My problem is I like the 700 action. There are very few options for 260 and plenty for 7mm-08. I have a 7mm-08 and like it. Are there any advantages between the 2? Is one better than the other for long range or are they similar?

Check the amount of ammo available for both. I suspect there is more available for the 7-08. That is if you're not a hand loader.

6.5 Creedmoor

I agree if OP can find a mass produced rifle he can afford in that chambering.

6.5 creedmoor was not an option...respect their posts' for me owning both the 7mm-08 and .260, my choice is the 7mm-08 in an 139 grain bullet, my favorite is a cheapo Stevens 200 in the 7mm-08 have done some work including stock and trigger work...it is a tack driver now. if they wanted to know about a 6.5 creedmoor, they would have asked for that input.

Adding a little to what I wrote earlier. Some of the best advice I ever got when looking for a new rifle was offered by a guy working at a gun store in Starkville MS in 1982. Go buy one of those Remington 788s in 7mm-08 that Walmart just got in. I did and never have regretted that choice. Ammo was almost impossible to find at that time but the way it shoots and kills deer I could not ask for anything better.

Had it been chambered in the 260 I bet I would be just as happy with it. But the introduction of the 260 was years away.

7mm-08.

First one I had was in a 700 ADL, and it was a really good shooter. Got rid of it and moved on to other things. A while later my wife wanted to start hunting. Got her a T3 in 7mm-08. Fantastic rifle, very accurate and reliable in a great round.

To be fair, I have no experience with the 260. I have no doubt it'd be a good one as well. I hand load so either would be a good choice for me. I just like the 7mm-08.

I've never had either but from what I read when I fired up the google machine is they're basically the same, performance wise. Not enough difference to matter either way if you ask me. if you're 100% he'll bent on one or the other, see which one has more factory ammo available. My guess would be 7-08.


May I ask why those two are the only options you chose if you like the 700?

I personally would go .260 and reload but that is because I'm a 6.5 freak. 7mm-08 ammo is definitely less expensive and more available where I live. I think the common sense choice would be the 7mm.

I handload so it is not a factor either way on ammo. I reload his 300 now. After reading the answers here I'm thinking 7-08 will be good for him. I can get him a Remington 700 CDL SF Stainless Fluted rifle. Add a Timney/Jewell trigger, new B&C stock and work up a load for him and we will be good.

I am thinking of a 6.5 for me, but I am a 700 guy. Just do not want a Savage or Ruger. That means I have to go custom.

Bullfrog: I have a rifle in every available bullet size but 6.5 and 338. I have a 338 Lapua on order for a Alaskian bear hunt next year. I am very interested in the 6.5's from reading on here. I spoke with Derrick at DSC show last month. Just not sure if I'm ready to pull trigger on it yet. I have 3 -257's and 3-270's., but after reading all these threads I feel like I need a 6.5. I have both sides of it covered. I know I will get one eventually. Just need to talk to Derrick.

I thought we had talked at DSC, If I remember correctly you and your buddy both got ZEROlights? Did not mean to get Texaspatriot.308 all bent out of shape on the creedmoor but here is why I recommended it over the 260, since you are looking for a 6.5. Nosler just released a 142 grain 6.5 bullet that has a published BC of over .7. That being the case I personally would want the extra magazine box room the creedmoor provides over the 260, especially since you hand load.
