Custom stock build (work in progress)

After browsing around the Internet, and coming across some interesting threads on other forums, I decided to do a full customization on my savage Tupperware stock. I had in my mind to basically to an A5 style stock (aesthetically) but after finding a few other customs on line, I settled on this design. Build started as a standard black savage Tupperware stock, build was done using wood and good old fashioned bondo as well a MFT AR15 pistol grip from that was modified to fit. Wish I had taken some more progress pictures, but you know how it goes.

Couple things I wanted was to raise the cheekweld about a 1/2", im now perfectly lined up with my scope. I also wanted a flat end to the butt stock for using a rear bag. I also wanted a flat forend for the same reason. I wanted a more comfortable grip angle, which was achieved with the pistol grip. I figured it was worth a shot to do it myself, and if it ends up looking like garbage, then I'll buy the boyds I was originally planning to anyways. I still have a little more shaping and bondo work to do to really get it where I want (like the forend that still have a bit of a curve to it, but mostly it's just filling in where there are air bubbles in the bondo then sanding smooth again.

Looks like a good start to me. when you build it yourself you get exactly what you want. Kudos as that is more work than I would want to go into.

Strawberry shortcake from albertsons. It was pretty good. I have high standards, I'm a baker.

It's been a process, but, final cost when I'm done will be less than $50. So it's worth it, being on a pretty tight gun budget. Gotta save money for my viper pst.

Putting the savings aside. You made it and get to enjoy it that is worth more than money to me.

What did you do to stiffen the forearm? Will the stock be bedded at the action?

Well done so far.

So far just the bondo and wood, which already feels better. I think I'm still going to epoxy some metal rods in. And yes, I intend to bed the action. But I wanted to make sure I like how the stock turns out before I spend the time and money doing either of those things.

You still boing to be able to get to the rear mounting screw?

Looks interesting. I'm not a fan of pistol grips on rifles which is why I'm not a fan of chassis, but looks like an interesting build. I considered doing this to my factory Savage Accustock and still may mess around with it. I have a background in automotive body work so plastic filler and fiberglass is right up my alley. Keep up the good work!

Both screws that hold the action in are in front of the trigger guard. (One also holds in the trigger guard) so the pistol grip covered up the rear trigger guard screw. So it's permanent now, but that was fine with me.

Good work so far. Did you verify your bolt would clear the cheek weld riser so it can be pulled out of the receiver?

Oh crud. No I didn't. I'll have to check when I get home. Thank you. I'd rather fix that now if it doesn't clear than after its painted.

It clears by about 1/8th inch. Good eye though.

Progress report. Currently painting. Love the way this stock is looking. Tomorrow I'll flip it over and splatter the other side, then hang it back up and clear coat it. All my other guns have been cleared with matte clear coat, and it always looks good. Does anybody thing I should go gloss on this one? I'm still leaning matte, especially since I will still hunt with this rifle from a deer blind.

I'd go matte for hunting. Maybe even flat. Or are those the same?

The matte still has just a slight sheen. Which is what I always preferred on my other rifles.

Finally got it finished today. Just need to install a recoil pad. I'm going to have to go with a custom pad because of the shape of the stock. I think I'll go with the flip flop recoil pad.
