New Custom 300WSM!! - 01/27/15 02:46 AM

Well I first want to thank everyone who gave me inputs on which cartridge to choose on my 300WSM rebarrel. After a lot of thought, I decided to stick with the 300WSM over going with a 270WSM. I ended up taking my rifle to Long Range Innovations in Lubbock as they're only about 1.5hrs from where I live and had a very fast turn around. I haven't had a chance to shoot it yet and hope the weather allows it this weekend but I'm not getting my hopes up. I hope to take it on my Barbary hunt the second week of Feb if I can shoot it before that.

Win M70 Stainless action
Shilen #4 contour stainless barrel
LRI Break
Timney trigger
B&C Alaskan stock pillar bedded
Meopta Meostar for now though I plan on pairing it with a lighter scope in the near future.

I'll post how it shoots in the Reloading section when I start load development. Can't wait to shoot it!!

It's broken in and sighted in with some old reloads thanks to the gunsmith but I still need to shoot it for myself to verify it's zeroed where I want it. Can't wait to go see what it can do! Just worried that I'm going to have a hard time between now and then to get out and test it. I want to do some quick load checks with 180 gr TTSX's along with 185 Bergers

Well took the gun out yesterday to shoot some reloads with 185gr bergers to see if I would get lucky and some shoot well enough for me to build a few for an upcoming hunt. I was overall pleased with the rifle. The recoil was not bad at all and I had 3/8 groups shoot sub-moa with the bergers, even with them being .030 off the lands. I think I found a load worth using and then working seating depth to tighten up the groups when I have time.

Best group was .62 MOA btw but that was 2 grains below a .87 group that had 2 more grains of powder...gonna work up the hotter load.

Well I got it out to the range yesterday for some very quick load validation. I was hoping to find a quick load with 185 Bergers that worked for my Barbary hunt in just over a week. I quickly loaded up a few 3 shot groups to slowly check pressure while hoping to find a charge the gun liked. After 8 groups, I found 3 that grouped sub-MOA (this was last weekend). Yesterday I went back with 12 rds of the best group size to velocity load from last weekend. After a few foulers, the first group measured .72. I adjusted the scope for zero and shot another group... .29 MOA!! Made my last adjustments for zero and shot 6 to check the velocities and that's it for now. Needless to say I'm incredibly impressed with how this rifle is shooting Bergers so far considering they are supposedly notoriously picky about seating depth and that it normally takes a lot of trial and error to get a rifle to shoot them well. I'll post pics later.

You can say that again. Nice shooting especially with the big boomer.

The load was complete luck. I did some pressure testing and loaded to the same overall length as the TSX's I'd loaded and then just hoped I'd find a group that worked. I got lucky that the Bergers liked that seating depth which is about .030 off the lands. If it keeps shooting like that though, idk if I'll mess with it.

Sometimes you hit a load and just say that is good enough. I have at times and other times seems like half wear out a barrel before finding a load I like.

Not luck.....just a good rifle and a good trigger finger

Yeah I would stick with that load. I always find one that shoots good enough and go with it. I don't like shooting 500 rounds trying to tweak a load. Lots of guess spend more time finding that perfect load than enjoying shoot a good one.

The two main groups are 3 shot groups. The others are 6 shots to check velocities of the load. Don't know what happened with the 2 fliers other than maybe the wx was getting to me as it was cold and misty. The bottom group is 4 shots.

It is a gift from God to find "the" load that quick.

Months ago I was looking for a load for Mike's Rem 700 in .308 Win. I loaded 178 A-maxes and Varget. I knew it would shoot around 44.0 gr. I didnt ladder test it. Just went straight to shooting groups at 500 yards. First load was 43.7 gr and it did fair. Second load was 44.0 (I think) and it shot an inch vertical at 500 yards. After that I packed up and went home. The other test loads I had made that were hotter I pulled apart and reloaded them to 44.0. Sent him a pic of the group and he said well hell I cant shoot it that tight! I say yeah but the load and the rifle can.

That's awesome fireman. You wouldn't consider this as "the load" though right? I kinda figured after toying with seating depth I might be able to do better once I have the time to do so.
