Thoughts on the smaller lighter 308 AR - 01/19/15 08:03 PM

So what is going to make one stand out above the rest? Looks like Windom and DPMS are close to the $1,000 mark. between those two i leaning towards Windom. What else is out there I should be looking at and why? Thanks

You looking for light or cheaper?

I'm looking a good value in a lightweight 308 AR that hopefully will have some parts that will interchange with an AR 15. The Windom has a lifetime warranty so it does have my attention.

Wilson Combat's offering is light..
my buddy has a LaRue 18" OBR and said my WC 18" is "a lot lighter"

Fully loaded at 10lbs here that isn't bad for an AR in .308

I'll have to weigh my creed to see what it weighs. I'm scared to smile

For what's out now, DPMS all the way. Their AR15s take a lot of flack, but their .308s are nothing at which to turn up your nose.

But apparently, Daniel Defense is entering the fray as well. May want to wait to see what comes out of SHOT.

The Smith and Wesson M&P-10 is 7.7 lbs. I had to chance to shoot one and I am sold.

The bad thing about the S&W M&P 10 is it's proprietary BCG/Barrel and the fact that they won't sell replacement parts...

If you get a 308AR I suggest you get the LR308 DPMS platform. Lots of parts out there for them and they also take a lot of AR15 parts which the AR10 (Armalite) platform doesn't take.

X2 for the CMMG MK3 CBR. I love mine. Mine isn't on the light side anymore since I have it setup for long range shooting, but it was when I bought it LOL.

But if you cannot get parts for it, you still got a $1,000 paper weight. Do a search (not THF) and you'll see the problems cropping up.

yes, this is a quality AR-10 and light
they cut as much metal out of the hand rail while keeping strength intact

a cheap, good value, mid weight AR-10 - look at DPMS

The parts are almost exclusively proprietary. In the below link, this guy has posted his issue on nearly every gun forum he could. He did some dumb stuff to his rifle (after buying used) and may have caused the damage himself. His own fault. OK, fair enough. The scary part is that, according to him, S&W wouldn't sell him a barrel, nor would they replace the barrel for him at his cost.

Forget that.

One of the biggest reasons I sold my POF. Proprietary parts from POF that they will sell you, however they have a proprietary barrel nut in which they won't sell the wrench for you have to send it back to them to get the barrel taken off. I simply wanted to take my barrel off and cut it down to 16" and rethread it for my suppressor. They wouldn't sell me the wrench so I sold their gun and bought one with common parts that I can take apart myself.

Forget that too. And good for you. These companies are snubbing themselves right out of business. It's only a matter of time before the .308 AR standard is set, and I'm betting DPMS pattern. Heck, it already is.

Haven't heard anything about Colt's 901. I'm very new to AR's but doesn't Colt supply all the military rifles?

Re: Thoughts on the smaller lighter 308 AR - 01/27/15 12:51 AM

I think it is one thing to assemble an inexpensive AR15 and expect it to run reliably..

I have seen enough lower priced and homemade AR10 not run for me to avoid them.
The Wilson Combat has run 100% flawless since day one, shoot multiple types of ammo all VERY well and run with our without a can.
They got the gas system tuned right.
I also know that if I ran into an issue they would do whatever it takes to make it right with no hassles.

I have the Windham in 223/5.56 and its incredibly accurate. I too am looking for a .308 now but I cant find many with match grade barrels. I want the same accuracy as getting a bolt action with milspec parts.
