Shooting in the freezing cold?

I need to shoot tomorrow or Friday , will the cold throw off a true 0?

I doubt it will be much. Would you hunt in cold temperatures?

It will throw it off some depending on the powder used it might not be much or it might be quite a bit. Some powders it may only be 30 fps from Summer time shooting, other powders it might be over 100 fps from Summertime shooting.

Go shoot and have fun. If the bullet is a little slower no big deal unless stretching it long range then count it as a learning experience

Try and keep the ammo on the inside of your jacket to help keep it warm.
PS: I heard this works/helps, but I have no proof of does/does not work.

But yes the cold we are having right now can effect the POI

Id say a lot of it depends on how far you are shooting and what your shooting. Sub 100 yard hunting and I doubt you have anything to worry about. 1000 yard shooting and im sure you do.

Ran a quick calculation with my setup: 300 yds. and all the same data except temp:
75 degrees = 2.6 MOA
0 degrees = 2.7 MOA

Can't say about powder/load temp, maybe keep them warm just in case.

Powder plays a role in how much too. The reloader powders seem to really take a hit with temperature differences. The H Extreme powders not near as much.

Judd some of the reloader powders have been improved to be less sensitive, much like UNIQUE was changed to burn cleaner. I think they were loosing business to Hodgdon and knew it

This is why I try to stay with the Extreme line of powders. They tolerate temp changes.

His ammo is loaded with H4350, so he's good on that. It will change up your trajectory no doubt. But your zero shift, if it does, it will be slight.

Let your cartridges sit out in the cold weather for hours versus bringing them straight out of a warm house to a warm truck then shooting them.

Might not be of much help, but one of my 25-06's uses RL-19. I'd read that it was a rather temp sensitive powder. So, when working up my loads, I would put the loaded ammo in the freezer then transfer to a cooler full of ice to take to the range.
Checked zero this past weekend with temps in the 20's and it was still dropping five shot in a nickel at 100 yards and zero was the same as were it was this past summer.

Might start carrying the rifles out to the range in August in the 100+ qt igloo!

If you put that ammo in a Yeti, it'll shoot better.

Are you referring to the new Reloader powders (22 and 26, IIRC?) or you've read where they have done the older ones...like 15/17/19?

I had a buddy that had either a 7mag or 300mag work up an awesome load at 200y that you could cover with a silver dollar with RL17. He took it to CO and it was cold and he went to sight in and couldn't consistantly hit an 8.5x11 sheet of paper. He scratched his head and thought it might be temp so he turned on the defroster and waited a little bit only to shoot it again and be a real small group. That trip he carried 2 shells around with him in his hand/glove to keep them warm. I don't think he will ever use RL17 again

Yes, the Reloder series of powders can be temp sensitive. R17 is a double base powder, which will make it even more temp sensitive. I shot R22 for years in my 300WM, and I would have to account for temp differences.

Alliant's newer Power Pro series of powders are temp stable. The 2000MR and 4000MR are very good powders. I have played with both, and like them a lot. The issue now is just finding them.

Reloader 15 is the one that I read (do not remember which gun mag it was) that had been changed. It said others would be but then looks like a different turn of new powders with new names being released AR Comp and the power pro line.

Interesting, thanks kmon. One thing I do know is when the sticker on the 1lb'ers of RL15 changed they are a little slower than the prior batches. No big deal but you do have to put some more fuel to keep the same speed. Just an observation I've had recently. I'm still not actively using RL15 even though the dasher/brx guys talk as if it is the magic juice...I just can't get it to perform like Varget.

Well I guess Ill never know what I did right or wrong. My ammo was stored in my house before the range. When I got to the range my ammo was in my bag and cooling to outside temps for approx. 20 minutes. My first round was probably 1-1.5" low and a hair right at cold bore. It didn't take but about 3 to get it pretty good. I don't know if it was my ammo acclimating or what but over all I think I adjusted it a click or two total. At this point I should be able to hit a pie plate at 100 yards

And this is why the hunters of men taught us to record environmental data, then where the cold bore shot landed. The temperature and DA can make strange things happen. It only takes 6-8 months of shooting to get enough data.

Im a fair weather kind of shooter and probably won't ever figure out temperature. It was cold
