Trigger question - 01/06/15 02:22 PM

I have a savage model 12 22-250 with accutrigger. I am having problems with the trigger or firing pin or something! r instance it may fire 5 times in a row then not fire the next two but those two have mark on the primer. Its not the shells because we have tried about 4 different brands all with same results. Anyone else ever have this happen to an accutrigger or anything similar? Any ideas?

I have taken it to a very well known gunsmith who messed with the trigger and firing pin and stuff and it may or may not have helped. I would say it shoots 90% of the time now instead of 80 but hard to trust a gun that don't shoot 100% of the time!!

If anyone has any ideas on something that may be causing this please let me know, Thanks

If the gunsmith couldn't diagnose the problem, then he may be well know. But he isn't very good. I'd take it to somebody else.

Sounds like light primer strikes to me -- try installing this: Extra power firing pin spring

You'll note in the reviews a few of them had the same behavior you're seeing rectified by this part

The Accutrigger is a little different from conventional triggers. If the trigger gets tripped without the blade being depressed sufficiently, the rifle will not fire unless it is recocked. I've heard of this happening to guys who shoot with gloves on.

I lean toward a firing pin spring also. Do you store the rifle with all the pressure off the spring? Meaning when you drop the bolt you pull the trigger (of course on an empty chamber) to allow the spring to lose it's tension.

The other thing that makes me wonder is have you shot any hot loads that made the firing pin pierce a primer? There could be parts of the primer in the bolt and the bolt just needs cleaned.

The spring tension should be somewhere in the 23lb range and you can probably youtube Savage bolt disassembly and take a look at everything. Look for shiny spots to make sure nothing is dragging and the pin isn't bent.
