Thoughts on 458 socom

Thinking about having a 458 socom built on a remington 700 action. What do yall think?

Awesome! It was designed for the AR platform, but would work well in a bolt gun also. You will get more speed out of the bolt gun, since there is no powder being used to cycle the bolt, like in an AR. You will gain about 50 to 75 fps on the low side, and as high as 100 to 125 fps on the high side depending on what bullet weight. Most data and speeds listed is for the AR.

Plus, if you loaded a subsonic round and shot it suppressed, it would be very quiet. A 350 to 500 grain bullet at 1050 fps would be awesome! I've loaded some subs and supers for this round, and it is a pretty cool cartridge!

Considering the bolt face and magazine issues, it may be much easier to simply chamber a 700 for the .450 Marlin.

I'm pretty sure it would cycle through a short action. - With a regular magnum bolt-face and a SA magazine dimensioned for the 284.

The Steyr big-bore is something very much like that.

The 458 Socom has a standard 308 bolt face, not the magnum size. The case is only slightly bigger than any of the 308 family rounds (22-250, 243, 260 Rem, 7mm-08 , 308, 338 federal, etc), so the magazine would work fine on this round. If you had a rifle chambered in one of these 308 family calibers, it would simply be a barrel swap to make it work. It would be an easy project to do.

I built my 458 Socom on a savage action. I used a 243 as a donor since it shares the 308 family bolt head. I used a 12" McGowen stainless barrel as part of an integral suppressed package.
The only thing I had to do to the internal box magazine was make a ramped spacer to feed correctly. I just used a piece of Delrin (from a cutting board).
I shoot remington 405 grain soft points at 1000 fps. Quiet and hard hitting.

Have you killed anything with the subs, like pigs or deer?

I haven't hunted with it as much as I would like to but anything it hits just falls over. The soft points expand just right at the slower speed, I have a recovered bullet from a pig.

How bad is the recoil when run subsonic? Do you think most NV gear can handle the thump?

I have a 458 Socom in 11.5" barrel. The recoil isn't bad at all. It's a pretty fun round to shoot! The only downside is finding ammo. If you roll you own, it's the way to go of the thumper rounds.
