cleaning guns

I normally don't clean mine if I know I'm going to shoot them in the upcoming weeks but if you were gonna store a gun for a year or so, how would you leave it? Dry barrel after cleaning? Light coat of oil? Run some rig grease through it?

Very light coat of oil on everything metal has worked for me for a long time. I usually just put a few drops or sprays on a cloth, then rub the entire exterior down. I count on my oiled cleaning patches or boresnakes to take care of the barrel.

The worst enemy of gun metal is moisture. While some claim that modern gun powder is less damaging, they ignore the moisture that it attracts and holds inside your gun barrel and other places. There are also some great dry lubricants out there that will protect clean metal surfaces for longer periods than what we had available before they hit the market.

Here's one that I use as a final run through my rifle barrels that has gotten very high marks in test reviews and from buyers alike. I also use it after each trip to the woods to remove any moisture that may have entered my barrel through normal outdoor use.

Hornady One Shot

On blued rifles, car wax is your friend. Clean, apply car wax-let it dry, and leave it on. No, it does not look good. Yes, it will protect blued rifles really well. I stopped buying blued rifles because it was so hard to keep them from rusting. I only buy stainless rifles now.

This stuff isn't cheap but many gun owners swear by it. I like to use it on my rifles with wood stocks, even though it works equally well on metal.

Mine get a coat of Corrosion-X before going in the safe for storage. The ones I hunt with get another before hunting season. Good to go for the season with that. Just apply coat, let set a few minutes then wipe off excess. Good to go for storage or a hunting season.
