Sometimes you just gotta stop and shoot the rimfires.

Well, after not shooting any of my rim fire rifles for a LONG while (mostly due to load development for a few of my center fire rifles and getting engrossed with my AR's for a bit) I took two of them with me (.17 HMR and .22 Mag, both bolt actions) to the ranch today. Put new scopes on them, sighted them in and blasted away at cans and empty disposable propane cylinders. I HAD A BLAST!! Haven't had that much fun shooting in a very long time.

Sometimes it's the little things that get you going again.

Took the Winchester 62A out a few weeks ago with a few boxes of shorts and LR. A few golf balls and chased them from about 20 yards to the 100 yard berm. Have to agree rimfires are fun

I'm a big fan of the 17 hmr. That little guy sure is fun!

Heck yeah they are fun. Sometimes I just need to shoot the big calibers, but rimfires are still fun, hands down.

I really hadn't had any experience with the little 17 until last weekend when I tried out a friend's CZ 452 in .17 HMR. I've had a CZ 455 for a while but hadn't shot it yet, so I took it along with the Marlin 981T in .22 Mag.

I like the .22 Mag, but I'm hooked on the .17 HMR now!

I recently got out the Marlin model 60 that my Father passed down to me. It got a general cleaning, and I treated both metal and wood with Renaissance wax, which got the thirty year old gun back to looking new again.



I think he paid 69 bucks or something like that for it, back in the early 80's. The thing is very accurate, so much so that I have not felt the need to buy any other 22 rifles. I did remove the open sights though, and mounted a Leupold 2-7x33 rimfire scope. Talk about a barrel of fun! - I get a big kick out of shooting my old man's 22, it brings back a lot of happy memories.

Yes, I could have bought a couple more of these rifles for what I paid for the scope. That's how it goes, sometimes.

This is my 17HMR, a Savage 93R17 BTVS.



This was my farm gun, that accompanied my on my morning walks around my cotton farm in South Texas. It has accounted for a number of varmints and pests, as one could imagine. The Nikon Prostaff 3-9x40 BDC scope has worked out perfectly for it. Sighted in at 100 yards, the first BDC bubble down from the cross-hairs serves double-duty at 125 yards, and at 30 feet. (because of the height of the scope above the bore) and this was the range where most pests were encountered on the farm.

I have since sold the farm and moved to the mountains of West Texas, but I still have the gun.

My son refers to this rifle as the "Grackle-Blaster 3000" because of an incident where I shot an annoying grackle out of a live-oak tree - and it came down in two equally-sized pieces due to the explosive expansion of the 17HMR at close range. My son pesters me to have "Grackle-Blaster 3000" engraved on the barrel and since this is apparently the gun that he wants me to pass down to him some day, I suppose I ought to go ahead and do it.

Of all the 17HMR's available, this is one of the best. I can recommend this model without reservation. The stock is outstanding, fitting me better than anything else I've owned. For me, this has stood out as a "can't miss with it" firearm.

I took out 2 .22s and my .17 this past Fridays and shot them for the first time in probably two years. They are fun to shoot!

I did learn a couple of things...

I don't like the scope I put on my CZ 452...I tried out a different scope and yuk! I'm also going to need to do something with the trigger.

As for the old Marlin bolt .22 w/peep...it's a hoot to shoot!

As for the .17 it's got a cheap scope that I don't like so I'm going to be changing that before I take it out again.

How is the trigger on your Savage? I have a single-set factory trigger on my 455 that's set at 1.5 lbs and though to me it's the perfect pull weight, the trigger as a whole is horrible. Very creepy and I really just don't trust it. It's going to get swapped out with a new Timney. The rifle itself is VERY accurate, I put a Swaro Z3 3-9x32 on it and the darned thing is a serious tack driver.

The trigger on the Savage registers at 2.3 pounds. - I had to get out my gauge and check it, I had no idea what the weight was. If I remember correctly, it is set as light as it will go.

I had a CZ in .223 one time, and had to get used to the set trigger being light - but having infinite over-travel. Once I got used to the over-travel, I did pretty good with it. The CZ's are great firearms, hard to beat.
