Lets talk muzzle brakes

I'm looking for a new muzzle brake for my Savage 10T. The recoil is not the problem, staying remotely on target is the problem due to the rifle jumping when shooting. I've found 3 different brakes that I like, but can't decide between the 3.

The first is the Precision Armament M11 Severe Duty, overall I like the fact that there are no ports on the bottom so shooting prone will not be a problem. It's big and ugly. http://precisionarmament.com/product/m11-muzzle-brake/

The second is the PA M41 Severe Duty. I like the idea behind the helical ports reducing the muzzle twist, but it has open pports 360 degrees which would cause dirt to blow back while shooting prone. Also this is the most appealing to the eye. http://precisionarmament.com/product/m41-muzzle-brake/

This gun is first and foremost a hunting rifle that serves as a long range target rifle for me. The looks are the least important factor.

Have you considered getting the rifle mag-na-ported? I much prefer mag-na-porting to any muzzle brake. It doesn't really reduce recoil, but rather reduces muzzle jump which greatly reduces perceived recoil. It's also much quieter than any brake.

I mean no disrespect, But in my opinion in those are three of the ugliest brake I have ever seen if I had to pick one it would be door number two. JP works but man it's ugly! Or put a suppressor QD brake and pick up a can in the near future.

I'd go here, or have my friend Ray build one! Cheaper too.

Blended brakes with no holes on the bottom to reduce the muzzle blast

I agree on the looks but I do not understand why on earth anyone would use a break with holes on the bottom. Especially in a long range shooter where you will be shooting prone

First, the bouncing may be caused by shooting position and form and might be corrected with some minor changes in form.

Try applying very firm rearward pressure on the rifle pulling it into the shoulder pocket, while leaning forward from the waist into the rifle.

Apply pressure until the crosshairs move with each heartbeat, and then let off just enough to stop them moving with the heartbeat.

I use so much rearward pressure that I can hear my shoulder joint crackle and pop, although admittedly I am older and things go crackle and pop a lot.

If shooting prone off of a bipod, load the bipod i.e. apply forward pressure on the rifle putting slight forward pressure on the bipod legs - while still firmly pulling the rifle back into the shoulder pocket.

See if that improves things.

As for brakes, Jared Joplin at APA makes an excellent brake, as does Badger Ordinance.

I'm a big muzzle brake fan, and have tried a lot of them. Some of the top brakes that I like are the APA Little and Fat Bastard brakes, JEC, and Tubb brake. I also do not like ports on the bottom side, since 99% of my shooting is prone. I have an APA Fat Bastard on my 308 Win and 300 Win Mag, and it has zero recoil. It allows you to stay on target during recoil, and I can spot my hits/misses very well. But it is big and loud (which I like). If you want a smaller brake, look at the JEC. I know Jason Christen, who makes these, very well. He can also custom make a certain size for you, if you need it.

I have a tub brake on one gun I shoot prone, the other does not have it one as it is heavy enough. I am more of a hunter and less shooter, so I don't get off on some dirt blowing back in my face from time to time if I have to shoot prone. I have found the brakes with holes in the front do very well for me. In hunting situations I shoot prone less than 10% of the time, for tacticool hole punching no holes on the bottom is a good idea.

What Jeffbird said on form and I use JEC Customs on two rifles. I put about 12 rounds down my 7 Rem Mag pushing 180's, yesterday and had no ill effects from it. Even saw impacts as they happened 300 yards and out.

For the price it's darn tough to beat a Harrell's Precision brake. They have a spiral and a port...you do not want the spiral for the prone issues mentioned above.

I have their spiral brakes on my bench rigs and they are good brakes.
